The first Mardi Gras was held on 24 June 1978 at 10 pm as a night-time celebratn followg a morng prott march and memoratn of the Stonewall Rts More than 500 people moved down Oxford St, llg for an end to discrimatn agast homosexuals employment and hog, an end to police harassment and the repeal of all anti-homosexual laws. 53 of the marchers were arrted although most charg were eventually dropped, the Sydney Morng Herald published the nam of those arrted full, leadg to many people beg outed to their iends and plac of employment, and many of those arrted lost their jobs as homosexualy was a crime New South Wal (NSW) until 1984.
In 1981 the para was shifted to Febary, wh the name changed to the "Sydney Gay Mardi Gras an creasgly large number of people not only participated the now summertime event, but a crowd of 5000 me to watch . This would ntue to bee an tegral part of the Sydney Gay & Lbian Mardi Gras.
