Bon: what look like trag wheels pop out so you don’t have to put your feet on the ground when you stop. Technilly speakg, matters whether the motor is a hub-drive or a mid-drive. In 1881, Paris, Gtave Trouvé fastened a lead-acid battery and a motor to a Brish tricycle, <em>et voilà</em>, he puttered his ntraptn along the Rue Valois. (Soters are sentially skateboards wh handl and motors but no seats, so let’s leave them out of this.) Cohen opened Joulvert 2016, about fifteen years after he emigrated om Israel. “It was the first ser e-bike shop the cy,” he told me over beverag at 19 Cleveland, a Mederranean fé he owns near Joulvert. At the time, e-bik were not technilly legal New York, but, he said, “the law was nsistently enforced.” Cohen started dabblg the bs Israel 2004, havg enlisted his father to stall cheap Che motors on standard bicycl. The bs took off; he sold his share to his brother 2012.</p><p class="paywall">Cohen went to Burng Man for the next few years, each time brgg more e-bik, which he distributed wh the stctn “Go molish them.” He explaed, “I wanted a report on everythg that uld go wrong, so I uld fix .” The ma problem was dt, so Cohen created a silin-sealed electric system that was waterproof and dtproof. In the years sce, his Burng Man clients have clud Puff Daddy, Gerard Butler, and Paris Hilton. The bik survived Burng Man, and their reputatn was ma.</p><p class="paywall">Among the throttle mols on display, I picked the Orber T1 ($3,000), bee did not look as if belonged “The Termator.” To engage the accelerator, you ph down on a sprg-load thumb throttle on the right grip. Tryg to summon the urage to prs the throttle, I pedalled along the empty siwalk of Broome Street. I turned onto Elizabeth Street, where there were some people on the siwalk whom I preferred not to mow down. I swched to the street. Tremblg, I prsed the throttle. Whoa! There was no jerk when the motor kicked , as there n be wh a pedal-assist. The throttle allows a more gradual acceleratn than a pedal-assist do. It’s also eful startg om a standstill on an upslope. By the time I reached the end of the block, I was ready to jo the Hells Angels.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Let’s say you’d like an e-bike but don’t want to spend the money, or you already own a bike. One optn is to buy an electric-bike nversn k—sentially, a motor, a battery, and electric ntrols that you add to your analog bike. Most of the ks require you to swap out one of the wheels, a procs that, acrdg to stctns I’ve read, rembl performg a head transplant wh a screwdriver.</p><p class="paywall">If you thk that sounds like a fun D.I.Y. challenge, I hate you. Luckily, there’s an alternative to this alternative. It is CLIP, an upgra that you clamp onto one wheel of your bike which stantly electrifi ($549). It’s bigger than a barrette but not as big as a breadbox, and as easy to e as both. No tools are required. If, later, you’re not an e-bike mood, tak a send to remove. This matte-whe vice weighs a ltle ls than a t (eight pounds) and looks like a sleek versn of the boot that traffic ps stick on the wheel of your r if you’ve fotten to pay your parkg tickets. It ntas a battery and a four-hundred-and-fifty-watt motor, and s two arms hug eher si of the ont wheel. A bike wh CLIP stalled n be ridn for fifteen to eighteen (or about forty-five mut) on a sgle charge and travels up to fifteen per hour. CLIP n be preorred for shippg this sprg, the ial n of a thoand havg sold out.</p><p class="paywall">I tried a prototype at the CLIP headquarters, the Brooklyn Navy Yard’s New Lab buildg. Datg om 1902, the buildg was the mache shop for every signifint ship lnched durg both World Wars. Now is home to more than two hundred startups. At the ferry dock, I was greeted by Somnath Ray, CLIP’s C.E.O. and founr, a boyishly charmg Indian archect whose résumé clus creatg electric rickshaws, unfortunately at a time when the world wasn’t ready for them. Ray chaperoned me to the CLIP offic, on the send floor, passg one groovy venture after another. He explaed that CLIP works via “ictn drive”: “Thk of as a smaller gear drivg a bigger wheel. Other ci, particularly Europe, have found ways of tacklg the matter. Paris has mted to banng most rs om s cy center by 2024. Utrecht has a three-story bike parkg garage (the world’s largt) that n hold more than twelve thoand five hundred bik. (The Netherlands has the hight number of bicycl per pa: twenty-three ln for a ltle unr eighteen ln people.) Copenhagen synchroniz s traffic lights favor of cyclists. It is a cy Norway, though—Trondheim—that has pneered the ventn most likely to be found a children’s book. On a dreadfully steep slope, the Trondheimers nstcted the Trampe CycloCable, the world’s first uphill movg siwalk for cyclists. This cyclist-helper is four hundred and twenty-six feet long and not much wir than your foot, travels at three to four per hour, and is operated by an unrground motorized ble. To e: While stg on your bicycle, keep your left foot on the pedal, and place your right foot on the metal platform attached to the nveyor belt. S/stand tight and you will be raised to the summ. And ’s ee!</p><p class="paywall">In that spir of novatn, I soliced pie--the-sky ias about how to make the cy more hospable to cyclists. Most suggtns volved bike paths: roomier, safer, and more of them. Joulvert’s K. C. Cohen wants to make slidg doors on taxis mandatory, outlawg doors that open outward and garrote unspectg cyclists. Randy Cohen, an avid biker, who might swch to electric when his body parts are too old to ntue pedallg, would like to see the elimatn of ee on-street parkg, or, as he puts , “the squanrg of srce public space to store private property.” CLIP’s Somnath Ray remend that e-bik have a tattletale button so that rirs n report astcture problems and enforcement issu. Please, someone, get to work on realizg the dream of Roberto Jeannon, om Propel: “I’d build bike lan above the streets, like ‘Bla Runner,’ or the High Le.” Nobody mentned offerg money to people who cycle to work, but European untri have vised tax-centive and purchase-premium programs. France, for stance, will give up to four thoand dollars to anyone replacg a r wh an e-bike; Belgium will pay you twenty-five cents per e if you bike to work.</p><p class="paywall">Wter was approachg, and I don’t like beg outsi when the temperature dips below eighty-three, but I was termed to fd out what was like to have accs to an e-bike whenever I wanted. Zoomo is a worldwi bs that rents e-bik by the week or the month, servicg them and offerg surance ($49/week; $199/month). Most of the ers are livery people, for whom payg the Ci Bike surcharge on e-bik for the long hours they work is prohibive. I ro a Zoomo bike home, five blocks away. Digned -hoe but ma Taiwan, the bike (there are two mols) is a workhorse, meant to be fortable and reliable for long stretch of time. I n nfintly report that my two-mute ri was very pleasant. The rt of the week? Turns out I don’t go anywhere. After a week, I returned the bike—another lovely jnt—and rumed my daily twenty-mute route on a pre-Peloton statnary bicycle.
