On that shoot, Aaron Staton, Vnie Kartheiser, Rich Sommer, and Michael Gladis all showed up on set for moral support. And then Janie Bryant, the stume signer, who I bond wh over a love for New Orleans, outfted me a vt wh a ltle embroired flr--lis on . Afterward, Matt lled to tell me he thought the scene was fantastic. When fundg for a show I was set to appear fell through, we cid the time was right. There was a proposed bs plan and life picked the date. And then Katra happened. As the storm barreled towards New Orleans, we were vatng Sonoma and uldn't get back time. My mother was schled to fly out soon after the storm. She uldn't get out. I panicked. Luckily, my goddghter was still town. She took the r and my mother, board up our hoe, raised everythg up se water me , and did the same thg to the store. She saved everythg. </p><p data-no-id="8" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Tom and I cid to thank her. So we cid to dig to savgs, and take her to Paris. A week before we were set to leave, my agent lled. "There's this dn for this TV show and they really want to see you," he said. "It's lled <em>Mad Men</em> and you'd play an art director 1960." I <em>never</em> got televisn dns, but I uldn't ncel this trip. I phed for another dn time. Not an optn. So I let go, the first time my memory when I chose life over show bs.</p><p data-no-id="9" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I returned home om Paris to rehearse an Off-Broadway play and received another ll om my agent. "You know," he went on, "they never found who they wanted for <em>Mad Men</em>." So I put on a ltle ast and a blazer and went to the dn for Matthew Weer and director Alan Taylor on my lunch break. And I got ... one dn. That do not happen. Wh works, you jump through hoops. On set there was no time. Someone once told me that every take st $10,000. Not an exact figure, but <em>Mad Men </em>was expensive. The actors had to be prepared and go, go, go.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Luckily, Matt knew what he wanted. At my makp and wardrobe tt, he me over and said, "You know what's gog to happen to Sal?" I said, "What?" Keep md, this was <em>before</em> we filmed the pilot. "Later on, I don't know when, but he's gog to go on a bs trip wh Don and Don's gog to bag a stewarss. And Sal's gog to go on the trip too. He's gog to have sex wh some guy and Don's gog to fd out—but 's not gog to matter." I said, "That's ol." I hadn't even read the whole script yet. I had jt been st. All I knew was: This was televisn! I was gog to brg Matt's image of Sal to life.</p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The first season was so magil. We filmed the pilot New York 2006. We had to wa the entire year bee Matt was still workg on <em>The Sopranos</em>. I remember Matt vg me and other st members to a screeng. It blew me away. They're not gog to let you fall and hurt yourself. My only thought was, "Oh God, I hope people see this bee 's AMC." Bee who was gog to watch AMC?</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><em>Mad Men</em>'s stg breakdown ma two pots about Sal: He was the artistic director of Sterlg Cooper and, to a morn dience, was clear that he was gay, but not to the world of 1960. That felt universal. I thk everyone their liv, some way, shape, or form, pretends to f . Beg a gay man, I knew what that was like. I was able to channel that, addg bs of rearch om the perd. Gay activists and many others would be pleased to know that Matt was adamant about havg a gay man play this part. That never me up durg the dn—I'd like to thk I wasn't st bee I was gay—but was nice to hear those words. You don't hear that often this bs.</p><p data-no-id="15" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I'm an open book. I've performed many rol on Broadway and Off-Broadway where I had to play straight—'s lled actg! I tend to over-gture, perhaps 's the French me, so for TV, everythg had to be dialed down to make each moment a ltle flare of a cigarette, a glt the eye. It had to be very stylized and very subtle. Not on set helped. I'll never fet one of the boardroom scen (one of the many, <em>many</em> boardroom scen). We were shootg to the night, pickg up each person's dialogue om every possible angle. After one early take, the director me to me wh a note: "Bryan, that was great... but uld you do ls gay?" I said, "Of urse!" He explaed that this was the urse for the character, but that I shouldn't worry: Sal would e back. He kept sayg that, a few tim at awards shows after we fished shootg, which was que tertg. I knew how much Matt loved all of his characters and the actors he st them, and how difficult mt have been to do the evable.</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"> This is me projectg, but I thk that the sendoff was so strong and so upsettg, that Sal's firg was so unfair, but so te to what would happen at that time, and what did happen and will ntue sometim to happen, that brgg Sal back wouldn't have been as strong. Matt wouldn't do anythg that isn't the bt. I don't thk the wrers knew that people were that attached to him. But after my fal episo, there was a big wre- outcry. A few years ago, I bumped to Elisabeth Moss at Bar Centrale, a wonrful Broadway waterg hole. She said, "If one more person up to me and asks me what's gog on wh Sal, I'm gog to scream."</p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Matt mentned along the way that Sal uld e back as a big director, but I thk the storyle took a different route. Matt is not one of the people who would let the public tell him what story to tell. The show is a succs bee no one panred to the opns of anyone else but the storyteller himself. Y, there were ocsnal mblgs om AMC or Lnsgate, the pany producg the show. Someone plaed about a moment season three where a bellhop slips his hand down my pants. Matt basilly said, "Wa a mute, you show people's heads gettg blown off movi on AMC. It's jt a hand gog down the pants!" They were thkg there was gog to be more, bee the hand go down the pants and then the alarm go off. Matt won and the scene stayed put.</p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">My last scene wasn't the firg. It was an cintal, that brief moment the office where I pass Harry Crane after Roger Sterlg fir me the first time. I only found out what would happen that episo when I got the script, maybe a week before. No one told me advance. The staff was very closed-mouthed about the story— a good way. But after my last scene, Rich Sommer, who played Harry, and I went out for drks afterwards. It was an odd thg bee, when someone is wrapped for the season, there's a big to-do. If someone leav the show, everyone go out and parti. But no one knew if I was g back. So there was no big sendoff. Jt drks wh Rich. We remisced, hoped, and schemed about how Sal would return.</p><p data-no-id="21" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">On the night my last episo aired, Sal wasn't even on my md. That was the night of Christa Hendricks' weddg. A betiful weddg. The most geo glowg bri. Sal wasn't even on my md.</p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I'm grateful for the three years I had on <em>Mad Men</em>. It changed my life, and I've had so many crazy thgs happen to me. Once I was at the SAG Awards and between and across the room was Jane Krakowski—we did our first Broadway show together, <em>Starlight Exprs</em>, years ago. Went over, hugged. "Love your show." "Love your show." "It's been too long. Let's get together." Blah-blah-blah. They're yellg "Get back to your seats!" over the speakers. As I shed back to my seat, someone at another table stood up abptly, propellg me to Meryl Streep. I almost knocked her down. She looked back at me and she said, "I love <em>Mad Men</em>! My hband and I watch every Sunday." I thought, "I n die now. Meryl Streep has seen my work."</p><p data-no-id="23" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Sure, I would have liked some closure, a few more episos to say goodbye to Sal. Though an open-end thread has s perks. People n ci for themselv what they want to happen to Sal. And 's btersweet for me, profsnally. When Michael returned for his Hare Krishna moment I asked him what was like. He told me, "Don't do ." I gus was kd of like livg the last act of <em>Our Town</em> or havg sex wh an ex. You know 's gog to be great for that one time, but then 's over. You know 's over, and you n never go back.</p><p data-no-id="24" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I've thought about where Sal wound up. On <em>Mad Men</em>, what you thk is gog to happen don't happen, but what do happen is wonrful a sad way. It's never really a happy endg. But I'd like to thk that Sal had a happy endg, that he do realize who he is and mov on. Unfortunately he'd have to break ltle Kty's heart, but I thk she had the clu by the end of the third season. I thk his mother di too. His Italian mother di and was an impet to go, "You know what? I'm pretendg for you, for all the other people. I'm gog to be who I am."
