Let em’ all I say- the more the merrier. In what follows I’ll make my argument.</p><p><strong>Termology</strong></p><p>First, we need to fs around wh termology a ltle. That means this sectn will be si baseball, I apologize for that. The termology has been muddled, partly bee the ncepts themselv are ntted.</p><p>There is a group of people our society, wh sometim overlappg experienc who are diverse or different om the average or regnized norm their sex, genr, sexual experienc and/or sexualy. An plete list (regnizg that many ems partially or wholly overlap) clus tersex people, gays, lbians, trans people, bisexuals, asexuals, non-bary people, sex workers, BDSM aficnados, poly people, people wh fetish, etc.</p><p><span>Now wh this tegory of people, there is a subset that is vered by labels like, “queer” or “LGBTQ+”, or whatever else you might prefer. The ndns of membership this subset group, and the polil benefs that e wh are eply unclear and unr-fed. Some people are what we will be llg </span><em>queer maximalists </em><span>- they thk this subset should clu more or ls everyone the list above. A more monplace posn is probably that should clu a lot of people above, but stop somewhere before cludg BDSM, polyamory, heterosexual fetishists, heterosexual sex-workers, etc.</span></p><p><span>Increasgly, many on the anti-woke left are </span><em>queer mimalists. </em><span>Queer mimalists want to clu gays, lbians, and trans people (often wh rtrictns on the latter group-e.g. only bary transgenr people or only transgenr people who experience dysphoria). Bisexuals are allowed, but sometim only if they are bisexual “enough”- ually eher meang that they are datg a same-sex partner, they n “prove” their same-sex attractn or that they have had “enough” same-sex sexual experienc. Obvly, dividual queer mimalists are more or ls clive about different thgs.</span></p><p>I acknowledge this termology of queer mimalism and maximalism isn’t ial, bee the term “queer” is ntroversial- often pecially among those I am here llg “queer-mimalists”. However, I’m not sure what other termology would work here. For example, if I were to say “LGBTQ+” I would be close to beggg the qutn, bee choosg what letters to clu I would have already prejudiced the issue. When termology is part of the terra of the fight, the termologist is screwed.</p><p><strong>Some thoughts on mimalism v maximalism</strong></p><p>Dpe havg anti-woke sympathi, I have very ltle sympathy for queer mimalism. I don’t know whether I’d ll myself a maximalist, but I’m closer to that than mimalism.</p><p>For me, queer mimalism reproduc some of the worst tennci of wokeism. It’s judgmental, paranoid, based on a transactnal unrstandg of human relatns, sober when should be silly, and silly when should be sober. It seems petty rather than magnanimo, the same way that wokens often do.</p><p>The argument is sometim ma that we need to be queer mimalists bee otherwise, people will intify as “queer” for ee brownie pots the marketplace of inti. I n’t ny this is possible. People are pretty cynil. Anyone who thks no one would lie about their inty a game of fdg ultra-nich to sell yourself needs their head examed.</p><p><span>What I would say is that </span><em>if people are gettg activist pots om havg any inty whatsoever, that’s the real problem. </em><span>The right way to bat this is by not givg people brownie pots on the basis of their inti anymore, not by narrowg the creria for which inti grant brownie pots.</span></p><p><strong>Empiril data on the barriers faced by bisexuals, asexuals, and non-bary trans people</strong></p><p>Three of the most ntted groups are bisexuals, asexuals, and non-bary people. Although don’t necsarily prove that I’m right, I thought uld be tertg to review some statistics around suicidaly for the groups- as a metric of general social strs.</p><p>In “Mental health and terpersonal functng self-intified asexual men and women”, Yule et al. (2013) look at the mental health of a sample of asexuals. 26% reported thoughts of suici, pared wh 12% of heterosexuals and 24% for aggregate bisexuals/homosexuals. The difference was signifint at the 0.001 level.</p><p>In “Suici Attempts Among Gay and Bisexual Men: Lifetime Prevalence and Antecents” Pl et al. (2002) found that 30% of self-intified bisexual men had planned suici at some pot their life, pared wh 20% of self-intified gay men.</p><p>Turng now to bisexual women, Koh & Ross (2006) “Mental Health Issu A Comparison of Lbian, Bisexual and Heterosexual Women” found that female bisexuals were more likely to be suicidal, and had poorer mental health, than both straight and lbian women.</p><p>What about the non-bary? In “Non-bary and bary transgenr youth: Comparison of mental health, self-harm, suicidaly, substance e and victimizatn experienc” Rim et al. (2019) found no subtegory of transgenr adolcents, bary or non-bary, had a rate of suicidal iatn ls than 63.8%</p><p>All of this suggts that bisexual, asexual, and non-bary people require extra support. Although don’t prove , is certaly nsistent wh the view that the groups are victimized var ways by society.</p><p>I want to be clear that this isn’t a petn or queer Olympics. We n pretty safely say that, to the gree that mental health and suicidaly are measur of qualy of life, asexuals and bisexuals do not, on average, have easy. Arguments over which groups have worse are potls.</p><p><strong>Social imagatn</strong></p><p><span>One of the arguments that is equently trotted out around this topic is that the terlocutor n’t image </span><em>how </em><span>the groups are opprsed. Let’s nsir as our example asexual people, one of the groupgs that most equently attracts wonrment. People will argue: “In no untry the world is illegal to be asexual. There are very few slurs directed at asexual people etc. Mental health statistics asi then, how uld they be opprsed?”</span></p><p>I thk the ncept of “opprsed” is part of the problem here. It narrows the social imagatn down to a few key exampl- slurs, vlence, and so on.</p><p>Consir though, our society has very nearly fallen apart. Civic stutns that gather people together to support one other have been flayed. We are all, to quote Putnam “bowlg alone”. Unns, church, sports groups- the are all much dimished. In our lonely world, havg a partner tak on extra signifince- n feel almost sential. For many asexuals though, fdg a partner will be difficult- and for some not sired. The alienatn of late palism may then fall pecially hard on them.</p><p>Th, the llapse of civil society has the potential to be pecially damagg to asexual people. We would not normally classify this as opprsn, yet ’s a stctural issue that differentially harms a particular group. Hence my ncern that “opprsn” may not be the bt nceptual lens for unrstandg disadvantage here.</p><p>Or nsir poverty. Bogaert (2004) “Asexualy: Prevalence and associated factors a natnal probabily sample” found that asexual people- both men and women- were substantially more likely to be poor than non-asexual people. Part of what explas this is probably that asexual people, for obv reasons, are more likely to live sgle-person hoeholds than others, and people who live sgle-person hoeholds are more likely to be poor. As so often, poverty is one of the ma pathways through which the disadvantaged are disadvantaged- yet another reason never to neglect the centraly of class.</p><p><strong>But I jt don’t want to talk about </strong></p><p>Another argument I hear om queer mimalists is that they’re sick of talkg about the topics. The problems, they argue, are simply takg up too much agenda space. To answer this argument on s own terms, I n absolutely, 100% promise that queer mimalism will lead to more time spent batg asexualy, bisexualy, and non-bary genrs. Phg back at people don’t make them go away, nor do make them ls visible. The Streisand effect is full bloom all matters of sex, genr & sexualy. If you want to keep talkg about asexuals, all the time and forever, a great way to guarantee that is to sist that they’re not queer.</p><p>Ultimately I don’t unrstand why this is beg ma to such a big al. Much of what we mt do to addrs all of this is the same stuff we’ve got to do to addrs other problems anyway. Build civil society. Increase mental health fundg. Let em’ all I say- the more the merrier. In what follows I’ll make my argument.</p><p><strong>Termology</strong></p><p>First, we need to fs around wh termology a ltle. That means this sectn will be si baseball, I apologize for that. The termology has been muddled, partly bee the ncepts themselv are ntted.</p><p>There is a group of people our society, wh sometim overlappg experienc who are diverse or different om the average or regnized norm their sex, genr, sexual experienc and/or sexualy. An plete list (regnizg that many ems partially or wholly overlap) clus tersex people, gays, lbians, trans people, bisexuals, asexuals, non-bary people, sex workers, BDSM aficnados, poly people, people wh fetish, etc.</p><p><span>Now wh this tegory of people, there is a subset that is vered by labels like, “queer” or “LGBTQ+”, or whatever else you might prefer. The ndns of membership this subset group, and the polil benefs that e wh are eply unclear and unr-fed. Some people are what we will be llg </span><em>queer maximalists </em><span>- they thk this subset should clu more or ls everyone the list above. A more monplace posn is probably that should clu a lot of people above, but stop somewhere before cludg BDSM, polyamory, heterosexual fetishists, heterosexual sex-workers, etc.</span></p><p><span>Increasgly, many on the anti-woke left are </span><em>queer mimalists. </em><span>Queer mimalists want to clu gays, lbians, and trans people (often wh rtrictns on the latter group-e.g. only bary transgenr people or only transgenr people who experience dysphoria). Bisexuals are allowed, but sometim only if they are bisexual “enough”- ually eher meang that they are datg a same-sex partner, they n “prove” their same-sex attractn or that they have had “enough” same-sex sexual experienc. Obvly, dividual queer mimalists are more or ls clive about different thgs.</span></p><p>I acknowledge this termology of queer mimalism and maximalism isn’t ial, bee the term “queer” is ntroversial- often pecially among those I am here llg “queer-mimalists”. However, I’m not sure what other termology would work here. For example, if I were to say “LGBTQ+” I would be close to beggg the qutn, bee choosg what letters to clu I would have already prejudiced the issue. When termology is part of the terra of the fight, the termologist is screwed.</p><p><strong>Some thoughts on mimalism v maximalism</strong></p><p>Dpe havg anti-woke sympathi, I have very ltle sympathy for queer mimalism. I don’t know whether I’d ll myself a maximalist, but I’m closer to that than mimalism.</p><p>For me, queer mimalism reproduc some of the worst tennci of wokeism. It’s judgmental, paranoid, based on a transactnal unrstandg of human relatns, sober when should be silly, and silly when should be sober. It seems petty rather than magnanimo, the same way that wokens often do.</p><p>The argument is sometim ma that we need to be queer mimalists bee otherwise, people will intify as “queer” for ee brownie pots the marketplace of inti. I n’t ny this is possible. People are pretty cynil. Anyone who thks no one would lie about their inty a game of fdg ultra-nich to sell yourself needs their head examed.</p><p><span>What I would say is that </span><em>if people are gettg activist pots om havg any inty whatsoever, that’s the real problem. </em><span>The right way to bat this is by not givg people brownie pots on the basis of their inti anymore, not by narrowg the creria for which inti grant brownie pots.</span></p><p><strong>Empiril data on the barriers faced by bisexuals, asexuals, and non-bary trans people</strong></p><p>Three of the most ntted groups are bisexuals, asexuals, and non-bary people. Although don’t necsarily prove that I’m right, I thought uld be tertg to review some statistics around suicidaly for the groups- as a metric of general social strs.</p><p>In “Mental health and terpersonal functng self-intified asexual men and women”, Yule et al. (2013) look at the mental health of a sample of asexuals. 26% reported thoughts of suici, pared wh 12% of heterosexuals and 24% for aggregate bisexuals/homosexuals. The difference was signifint at the 0.001 level.</p><p>In “Suici Attempts Among Gay and Bisexual Men: Lifetime Prevalence and Antecents” Pl et al. (2002) found that 30% of self-intified bisexual men had planned suici at some pot their life, pared wh 20% of self-intified gay men.</p><p>Turng now to bisexual women, Koh & Ross (2006) “Mental Health Issu A Comparison of Lbian, Bisexual and Heterosexual Women” found that female bisexuals were more likely to be suicidal, and had poorer mental health, than both straight and lbian women.</p><p>What about the non-bary? In “Non-bary and bary transgenr youth: Comparison of mental health, self-harm, suicidaly, substance e and victimizatn experienc” Rim et al. (2019) found no subtegory of transgenr adolcents, bary or non-bary, had a rate of suicidal iatn ls than 63.8%</p><p>All of this suggts that bisexual, asexual, and non-bary people require extra support. Although don’t prove , is certaly nsistent wh the view that the groups are victimized var ways by society.</p><p>I want to be clear that this isn’t a petn or queer Olympics. We n pretty safely say that, to the gree that mental health and suicidaly are measur of qualy of life, asexuals and bisexuals do not, on average, have easy. Arguments over which groups have worse are potls.</p><p><strong>Social imagatn</strong></p><p><span>One of the arguments that is equently trotted out around this topic is that the terlocutor n’t image </span><em>how </em><span>the groups are opprsed. Let’s nsir as our example asexual people, one of the groupgs that most equently attracts wonrment. People will argue: “In no untry the world is illegal to be asexual. There are very few slurs directed at asexual people etc. Mental health statistics asi then, how uld they be opprsed?”</span></p><p>I thk the ncept of “opprsed” is part of the problem here. It narrows the social imagatn down to a few key exampl- slurs, vlence, and so on.</p><p>Consir though, our society has very nearly fallen apart. Civic stutns that gather people together to support one other have been flayed. We are all, to quote Putnam “bowlg alone”. Unns, church, sports groups- the are all much dimished. In our lonely world, havg a partner tak on extra signifince- n feel almost sential. For many asexuals though, fdg a partner will be difficult- and for some not sired. The alienatn of late palism may then fall pecially hard on them.</p><p>Th, the llapse of civil society has the potential to be pecially damagg to asexual people. We would not normally classify this as opprsn, yet ’s a stctural issue that differentially harms a particular group. Hence my ncern that “opprsn” may not be the bt nceptual lens for unrstandg disadvantage here.</p><p>Or nsir poverty. Bogaert (2004) “Asexualy: Prevalence and associated factors a natnal probabily sample” found that asexual people- both men and women- were substantially more likely to be poor than non-asexual people. Part of what explas this is probably that asexual people, for obv reasons, are more likely to live sgle-person hoeholds than others, and people who live sgle-person hoeholds are more likely to be poor. As so often, poverty is one of the ma pathways through which the disadvantaged are disadvantaged- yet another reason never to neglect the centraly of class.</p><p><strong>But I jt don’t want to talk about </strong></p><p>Another argument I hear om queer mimalists is that they’re sick of talkg about the topics. The problems, they argue, are simply takg up too much agenda space. To answer this argument on s own terms, I n absolutely, 100% promise that queer mimalism will lead to more time spent batg asexualy, bisexualy, and non-bary genrs.
