After more than a year of shut-downs - cludg all thgs wild and weird that once helped Asheville, North Carola earn the tle of quirkit town - one of ’s more unique events is back. The Miss Gay Lata pageant will be held Nov. 20 at the Diana Wortham Theater. I photographed backstage at the 2019 pageant, featured the imag and the last one before panmic closur. Miss Gay Lata started as a small drag event 2008 anized by founr and producer El Gonzalez who was born Cuba and has lived Asheville for many years. The pageant evolved over the years to a more clive event open to any performer, regardls of sexual orientatn, natnaly, or genr intifitn. The event has gaed attentn outsi of this wtern North Carola town of 360,000 and now clus natnal tle holrs petg. The pageant almost always sells out. At this last event, signer and Project Runway falist Garo Sparo served as a celebry judge. I was exced about photographg backstage stead of the actual event. Watchg the performers apply makp and change to elaborate and betifully-signed stum was fascatg. The work and ditn put to preparg for the event was evint like Sunny De Le's bright yellow ensemble that clud a bird and feathers. Sunny De Le was crowned Miss Gay Lata 2019.

El Gonzalez lnched the Miss Gay Lata Asheville pageant 2008 as a way to highlight the talents of lol drag performers who otherwise lacked a venue. A double feature, the celebratn will also feature Mister Gay Lato Asheville, which Gonzalez first troduced 2019.
Eight nttants will vie for the tle of Miss Gay Lata the tegori of terview, natnal stume, talent and eveng gown. Meanwhile, four addnal nttants will pete for Mister Gay Lato terview, swimsu, talent and formal wear.
