In the fluencer space, people are nstantly sayg, “Here is the thg that will work for you.” I’m not apt to believe a lot of thgs, but skre I will.</p><p data-no-id="11" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">As far as wellns go, somethg to me that’s tertg about wellns is that I’m Type 1 diabetic, and Type 1 diabet is an tertg disease that if you have accs to sul, you n live a pretty normal life, and if you don’t, you’ll die wh weeks. It’s a disease that no one is tryg to say they n cure wh more “wellnsy” cur. Even wh ncer, people will say, “Jt drk this tea.” Wh Type 1 diabet, everyone is on the same page that sul is the only way to cure . I feel like that has ma me unsceptible to wellns speak bee those thgs n’t do anythg for me; I jt need sul.</p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>CT: Can you talk about the rearch that went to craftg the ntext of the novel? What are some thgs that surprised you?</strong></p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>JG:</strong> I worked at a space where I was dog affiliate marketg, like “100 Thgs You Should Buy on Amazon,” bee I got a lot of PR. I didn’t want to nigrate that work, but I did want to show how silly the language around sellg wellns n be. I wanted to differentiate sellg wellns through a PR perspective and Cass’ perspective. Wellns-wise, was a lot of Instagram and a lot of Redd. I do have a ton of iends who are way more to wellns than I am. I talked to them about why they feel so sure about the products and activi they swear by. When I started wrg the novel, I wanted Cass to be a ltle more dishont, but later I found far more tertg to wre about a person who hontly believ somethg. That was a turng pot wrg . I jt thk a lot of fluencers really believe themselv. Lookg at that motivatn is much more tertg to me than someone lookg to trick people and make money.</p><p data-no-id="14" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>CT: What about Jane’s character ma important for you to statn the narrative through her POV?</strong></p><p data-no-id="15" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>JG:</strong> I love an unlikable protagonist. I thk of myself as an unlikable protagonist sometim. I’m not like Jane, but was liberatg to give voice to somethg about the unlikable thgs about me and put them Jane and then amp them up. The ia of acknowledgg the privilege of those around you but not your own is very ter culture a nutshell. I thk she’s someone that would love to watch a Twter pile-on, but the moment that someone qutns somethg she said, she’d cmble. I thk that’s human, but is somethg we should exame wh ourselv. I do thk ’s more fun to wre the more villao parts of people.</p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I actually found more humoro to wre her perspective. In the first draft, I had wrten half of through Tom’s POV, which was really tertg to wre and fely ls barbed and funny, and Jane was such a great ndu for humor. What were you tryg to say about fluencers, and how so many of sperately feel the need to be fluenced by them, when their so-lled magism boils down to superficial tras ( Cass’ se, her bety)?</strong></p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>JG:</strong> I’m always tryg to talk to people about “hot privilege.” Sometim you’ll meet a person and thk that they’re so tertg, and you’ll thk ’s strange how you found them so tertg, and then you realize that was bee they were really attractive. If a ls-attractive person had unual terts, I’d thk they were weird.</p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">It’s tertg for a rear who n’t see Cass to be like, “What’s the appeal?” But is tertg to thk about how willg you’d be to give someone the benef of the doubt when they say somethg tertg or wise or say somethg unexpectedly telligent, all bee of how they look.
