Ashers Bakg Co. Northern Ireland refed 2014 to make a ke iced wh the "Same Street" characters Bert and Ernie and the phrase "Support Gay Marriage." The owners argued they shouldn't be forced to put msag on their products at odds wh their Christian beliefs. The urt agreed. "In a nutshell, the objectn was to the msage and not to any particular person or persons," Judge Brenda Hale wrote the unanimo cisn. "It is eply huiatg, and an afont to human digny, to ny someone a service bee of that person's race, genr, disabily, sexual orientatn or any of the other protected personal characteristics. But that is not what happened this se." The general manager of the bakery, Daniel McArthur, said he was relieved by the cisn. "I want to start by thankg God," he told reporters. "He has been wh durg the challeng of the last four years." The se was brought by the ctomer, gay rights activist Gareth Lee, and the Equaly Commissn for Northern Ireland. It received backg om the Rabow Project, Northern Ireland's largt support anizatn for lbian, gay, bisexual and transgenr people. The Rabow Project exprsed disappotment wh the cisn. "We believe this is direct discrimatn for which there n be no jtifitn," director John O'Doherty said. "We will, however, take time to study this judgment by the Supreme Court to unrstand fully s implitns for the rights of LGBT people to accs goods, facili and servic whout discrimatn." It wasn't immediately clear if the platiffs plan to appeal the lg to the European Court of Human Rights.
