Perez adms he prefers to spend Saturdays travelg to New York Cy to see Broadway mils.</p><p class="">He has shot a gun <em>once</em> before. But that was a long time ago.</p><p class="nt-medium">"I thk the last time was wh a big, long rifle. And they said somethg about, 'Pull!' and you had to shoot," Perez remembers. "It was somethg totally different."</p><p class="">Different, bee now he's shootg wh the Boston Pk Pistols — a group brought together by their LGBT inty and tert g firearms for self-fense, if need be. (Rob Lubbock/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">Upon arrival, Perez lik the scene. It's a group of gay people, like himself, eher beg or beg te marksmen and markswomen. And soon, he gets a turn wh the guns.</p><p class="">Aaron Grossman — an NRA-certified stctor and lear of the Boston Pk Pistols, who intifi as a sexual mory — starts his lson wh Perez by showg the basics of wieldg a Ruger .22 handgun.</p><p class="nt-medium">"You're gonna le up the three dots," Grossman says, showg Perez how to e the sights on the top of the pistol.</p><p class="">Then, Perez squeez off some rounds.</p><p class="nt-medium">"Did I h any of my targets?" he asks.</p><p class="nt-medium">"Hontly, I was lookg at you, not the target," Grossman says. (Rob Lubbock/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class=""><strong>As Hate Crim Rise, Fears Do, Too</strong></p><p class="">Origally formed 2000, Boston had a Pk Pistols group that disband some years ago. But Grossman revived after the 2016 <a href=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pulse gay nightclub massacre</a> Orlando.</p><p class="">Before headg to the gun range Harvard, some participants often first grab bnch Somerville. They're joed by others later at the gun range. Though the numbers fluctuate, Pk Pistols' meetups often draw at least 15 people to the shootg range.<strong> </strong></p><p class="">Sce the Pulse shootg, Grossman says gradually, more and more people have been jog the group. Wh state data showg <a href=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nearly a 10 percent rise</a> hate crim Massachetts 2017 over the prev year, Grossman says Pk Pistols participants worry they uld be victims of a vlent hate crime.</p><p class="nt-medium">"And when that happens, 's too late to seek help, 's too late to avoid ," he says. "Bee the suatn is already there."</p><p class="">While hate crim Massachetts have risen overall, the most recent data show crim based on victims' sexual orientatn and genr inty the state have creased recent years.</p><p class="">Dpe whatever progrs data may show, Perez says he's still ncerned.</p><p class="nt-medium">"You're hearg all of the horrible stori. I, unfortunately, want to be prepared," he says. "Of urse, you have to gge the suatn very refully. But that's what I'm hopg to get out of [beg wh the Pk Pistols] — how to al wh somethg like that. I jt want to be prepared."</p><p class="">Perez says his greatt fear is he'll be a victim of a physil attack, ught off guard and won't know what to do.</p><p class="">Some may trace the rise hate crim to overheated rhetoric sce the electn of Print Tmp. But Perez, who voted for Tmp, don't see the rrelatn.</p><p class="nt-medium">"And I rpect folks who have that sentiment," he says. "I don't really feel that our print is unrmg me as a LGBT. I know for trans folks, there's some issu there."</p><p class="">Most folks the Boston Pk Pistols don't want to be this story bee they don't want to <em>out</em> themselv as gun owners or advot. They say there's more of a stigma Massachetts beg a gun owner than beg gay.</p><p class="">The state attorney general enforc the state's civil rights act. In a statement, the AG's office wouldn't ment on the Boston Pk Pistols group, but said victims of bias-motivated harassment and vlence should ll the <a href=" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AG's special hotle</a> (1-800-994-3228) for hate crim.</p><figure class="article-fig size-large"><a href="><picture><img class="size-large article-image" src=" alt="Guns pot down a range at the Harvard Sportsmen's Club Harvard, Mass. (Rob Lubbock/WBUR)</figptn></figure><p class="">Back at the gun range, Perez gets more fortable holdg the pistol, and looks like he may have even h the paper target a few tim.</p><p class="nt-medium">"I totally felt at ease practicg wh folks like me — of siar backgrounds," Perez says. "I thk that if this was a regular settg, I wouldn't have felt as relaxed."</p><p class="">(Beg relaxed, as Grossman said earlier, is kd of a prerequise to safe shootg.)</p><p class="">When asked if he feels ready to fend himself wh a firearm, Perez says, "Not at all."</p><p class="nt-medium">"This requir a lot more ssns for me," he says.</p><p class="">At the end of the day, the group sweeps up hundreds of spent shell sgs. As Perez helps clean up, he says he'll skip some Broadway shows New York to e shoot wh the Boston Pk Pistols.
