I knew that even this choice of subject matter was potentially divisive, so slightly removg myself om that disurse while tryg to engage wh a scholarly way felt like a way to mata a sense of nuance. If I genuely believed that Fire Island was only s worst aspects, I wouldn’t be terted wrg a book about . Fire Island is que easy fodr for some opposnal tak. Those tak are totally valid, and ’s not that I didn’t engage wh them, but would be possible to bee too immersed that world. The ways which Fire Island has been a loc for those ncerns do have a lot to tell . Midge Decter’s piece “The Boys on the Beach” rails agast how Fire Island beme this sexed-up place post-liberatn, and how for her, as a nservative fay woman, the P the 60s was offensive bee all the gays did was mce along the beach and have nice hair. I thk of that as a really stctive example: hedonism and exprsn have been policized. It’s not news to people wh Fire Island that qutns of diversy and cln have long been a problem, and seems that those are beg addrsed now. There were moments where I wished that the evince would play ball, like, “Damm, where’s Patricia Highsmh’s novel set on Fire Island?” There are the phantom imaged works that we don’t have bee they don’t exist. To wonr why is to speculate, but I felt myself bshg agast those gaps sometim.</p><p data-no-id="27" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>ESQ: You mentned the panmic as another nstrag factor. I found myself this bizarre posn 2020, ready to wre and then sudnly lockdown. The week before, I’d booked flights thkg was okay to spend more time on Fire Island and do a lot of the wrg there. I do wonr how that would have changed the book.</p><p data-no-id="29" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I cid the end that the nstrat to image and live virly was a part of this story. So many people know what Fire Island is but may never go. It remas a kd of horizon for loads of queer people. There’s a different versn of the book, which is a disembodied lerary history that says, “Here is what’s been wrten, and here’s what we n learn about ,” but I felt as soon as I arrived on Fire Island that there was no way I uld wre that wasn’t lored by my own experience. Perhaps many ways, I had felt ambivalent about muny and what that means and what that looks like, so there was somethg personal at stake wh this book.
