I had read that the date was 1963, but was rrected by Gayle Rub, who is the greatt historian of the early leather scene. As I hted at the DAUGHTERS OF BILITIS, 1955, poster, there was a divisn between the more assiatnist homophile movement and the ls polil but more diverse bar scen.
The early SF leather scene was predomantly (though certaly not exclively) populated by cisgenr, whe, gay men. The Tool Box, a gay male leather bar, was the first leather bar South of Market, San Francis. The June 1964 Pl Welch Life magaze article “Homosexualy In Ameri” was the first time a natnal Amerin publitn reported on gay issu; Life‘s photographer was referred to the Tool Box for the article by gay activist Hal Call, who had long worked to dispel the myth that all gay men were effemate.
