From group shows like Oakland Mm of California’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Queer California: Untold Stori</em></a> to sgle artist exhibns such as the Queens Mm’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Nilas Moufarrrege: Regnize My Sign</em></a>, mm curators have spent the past few years rurrectg LGBTQ+ artists and narrativ that have long been ignored by mastream art history. Even this summer’s Costume Instute’s pop blockbter, <a href="><em>CAMP: Not on Fashn</em></a>, traced the athetic origs of this cidly queer satiril style to classil Gre-Roman nus and the opulence of Versaill.</p><p>Revisg art history to clu more LGBTQ+ artists and experienc isn’t easy. It requir more than simply reassertg the prence of artists who were targets of phobic censorship. Art historians mt al wh the ever-evolvg termology for queerns, begng wh the solidifitn of the divisn between heterosexualy and homosexualy at the turn of the 20th century. Many artists, particularly before Stonewall, would not — or uld not — have even intified as LGBTQ+, even though they reprented same-sex sire or genr-nonnformg inti their art. For example, I wrote about the Metropolan Mm of Art’s restallatn of their 20<sup>th</sup> century Art sectn for <em>ArtFom.</em> Not only did they mix Amerin art and European art, which they ed to separate sce Amerin art was seen as ls important, but there’s now also queer history and queer cultural productn reprented wh a sectn on Pl Cadm, Jared French, and Gee Platt Lyn. class="body__ner-ntaer"><p><strong>Do you thk this reevaluatn of queer art history is fluencg today’s ntemporary artists? How?</strong></p><p>That was one of the reasons we published <em>Art & Queer Culture</em>. We want other people to see the richns of this culture the hop that this history will be able. In our culture generally, we’re barraged by the now. It’s hard to be historil when you n’t even keep up wh the prent moment. What I want as a queer art historian is to retrieve this cultural history to try to put dialogue wh the ntemporary moment. Not so people n thk, “Oh, that’s over,” but to see as a rource. The historil moment n be an alternative for how thgs are anized now, and maybe eful for imagg other kds of possibili.</p><p>I don’t thk there are as many — or at least as many as I’d like — artists lookg toward the queer history of the early 20<sup>th</sup> century. That beg said, there are some ntemporary artists drawg on history. There’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Andrea Geyer</a>, a lbian artist who has done projects about queer women the art world who have been wrten out of the history of art, some of whom worked at MoMA. Another example of someone very mted to queer and trans history is <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Chris E Vargas</a> wh the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mm of Transgenr Hirstory & Art (MOTHA)</a>. He created an alternative mm of trans history and art bee there is none. It’s not necsarily what we thk of artists dog (makg objects), but stead, ’s a kd of historil retrieval that’s both rearch and creative.</p><p><strong>One of my favore aspects of MOTHA is that Vargas clus imaged or fictnal historil objects and narrativ bee wh queer and trans histori, you have to tangle wh signifint absenc the rerds.</strong></p><p>I like the ia that sometim queer history is vented history. Even some of the stori that are told about Stonewall fall to this tegory. It seems that everyone has their own versn of what happened. If you want to believe a fact-based history, ’s a distortn, but on the other hand, ’s also not, bee the stori that are told bee part of history too. The stori are what make post-Stonewall culture. I love that about queer culture. From group shows like Oakland Mm of California’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Queer California: Untold Stori</em></a> to sgle artist exhibns such as the Queens Mm’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>Nilas Moufarrrege: Regnize My Sign</em></a>, mm curators have spent the past few years rurrectg LGBTQ+ artists and narrativ that have long been ignored by mastream art history. Even this summer’s Costume Instute’s pop blockbter, <a href="><em>CAMP: Not on Fashn</em></a>, traced the athetic origs of this cidly queer satiril style to classil Gre-Roman nus and the opulence of Versaill.</p><p>Revisg art history to clu more LGBTQ+ artists and experienc isn’t easy. It requir more than simply reassertg the prence of artists who were targets of phobic censorship. Art historians mt al wh the ever-evolvg termology for queerns, begng wh the solidifitn of the divisn between heterosexualy and homosexualy at the turn of the 20th century. Many artists, particularly before Stonewall, would not — or uld not — have even intified as LGBTQ+, even though they reprented same-sex sire or genr-nonnformg inti their art. Thgs happened private, but they’re still a part of history. And that means retrievg the private materials, and givg them the rpect that is ually rerved for high art. <em>Art & Queer Culture</em> was the first time Phaidon published a book wh imag not unrstood or tend as art by the maker. Along wh fe art, there are activism posters, bar murals, anonymo photographs, works by amatr photographers like <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Alice Aten</a>, scrapbooks, etc. Sometim the were created not only for the dividual maker, but also for their immediate circle of iends, lovers, and others.</p><p>For example, there’s an credible scrapbook om Atralia the 1930s by a woman named Monte Punshon. Every time there was a woman acplished sports, a woman cross-drsed such as Marlene Dietrich, or an androgyno woman a newspaper, she’d clip the picture, and add to her scrapbook. While she was clippg om mastream newspapers, she created a world wh that scrapbook of entirely butch and androgyno women. She not only created an all-female world, but a world anized by her sir. How?</strong></p><p>That was one of the reasons we published <em>Art & Queer Culture</em>. We want other people to see the richns of this culture the hop that this history will be able. In our culture generally, we’re barraged by the now. It’s hard to be historil when you n’t even keep up wh the prent moment. What I want as a queer art historian is to retrieve this cultural history to try to put dialogue wh the ntemporary moment. Not so people n thk, “Oh, that’s over,” but to see as a rource. The historil moment n be an alternative for how thgs are anized now, and maybe eful for imagg other kds of possibili.</p><p>I don’t thk there are as many — or at least as many as I’d like — artists lookg toward the queer history of the early 20<sup>th</sup> century. That beg said, there are some ntemporary artists drawg on history. There’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Andrea Geyer</a>, a lbian artist who has done projects about queer women the art world who have been wrten out of the history of art, some of whom worked at MoMA. Another example of someone very mted to queer and trans history is <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Chris E Vargas</a> wh the <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Mm of Transgenr Hirstory & Art (MOTHA)</a>. He created an alternative mm of trans history and art bee there is none. It’s not necsarily what we thk of artists dog (makg objects), but stead, ’s a kd of historil retrieval that’s both rearch and creative.</p><p><strong>One of my favore aspects of MOTHA is that Vargas clus imaged or fictnal historil objects and narrativ bee wh queer and trans histori, you have to tangle wh signifint absenc the rerds.</strong></p><p>I like the ia that sometim queer history is vented history. Even some of the stori that are told about Stonewall fall to this tegory. It seems that everyone has their own versn of what happened. If you want to believe a fact-based history, ’s a distortn, but on the other hand, ’s also not, bee the stori that are told bee part of history too. The stori are what make post-Stonewall culture. I love that about queer culture.
