Gay began practicg law Eastern Wake County 1980. In 1995, he and Donna Stroud found Gay & Stroud a rtored historic home lled Patience Hall downtown Zebulon. In 1996, Darren Jackson joed the firm, which changed s name to Gay, Stroud & Jackson 1999.
