Abstract This paper explor what factors ntribute to distguishg gay soundg and straight man soundg speech; lguistic gnate or social knowledge and whether the genr of listeners also term abily intifitn. To answer the qutns, 286 participants were classified by natnaly to 3 groups of participants: Thai listeners as a ntrol group, Zhuang, and Other listeners. They were asked to listen to 12 voice stimuli Thai om straight and gay men and intify the genr of the speakers. The oute revealed that the accuracy rate intifyg a speaker’s genr varied among the 3 groups of listeners wh Thai listeners srg the hight genr intifitn, followed by the Others and Zhuang rpectively. This dit that social knowledge gaed om one’s prence Thailand is more important than lguistic gnate. Genr intifitn may have been ma based on the expectatn of the ‘typil’ social scene such as the high visibily of gay men Thailand.
