Still, every year as Pri Month approach, a <a href=">bate epts about whether kk belongs at Pri </a><a href=">at all</a>. Those hopg to ot kksters often ce the prence of children as their top ncern. That was potedly the se this year when Twter ers argued that kk at Pri is a <a href=">highly sexualized experience that children should be shield om</a>. <a href=">Thoands</a> of ers supported the posts, claimg that kk at Pri <a href=">cross a le</a> bee mors also attend events. I agree that Pri should be a welg space for children and teens, but policg how others show up don’t protect or uplift young people. Instead, homogenizg self-exprsn at Pri will do more harm to our children than good. If we want our children to learn and grow om their experienc at Pri, we should hope that they’ll enunter kk when they attend. want.”</p><p>A feroc and radil activist, Howard, who was bisexual, vehemently supported and participated the antiwar and femist movements, as well as the Gay Liberatn Front and Gay Activists’ Alliance (she was the chair for several years). And Howard never went quietly. “Though she was humble, she uld be loud when need,” <a href=">wrote</a> bi activist and thor Tom Limoncelli. Friends wh many si the Stonewall Inn the night of the uprisg, Howard created a one-month Stonewall anniversary rally July 1969. Then, one year after Stonewall, she and a mtee planned Gay Pri Week and the Christopher Street Liberatn Day Para. Often lled “The Mother of Pri,” Howard’s week and para evolved to the annual New York Cy Pri march and Pri celebratns we now know around the world.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p>To assemble the para and the first gay pri week, Howard and the mtee met at the Osr Wil Memorial Bookshop, the first gay and lbian bookstore Ameri, at 15 Christopher Street. Wh the bookstore’s mailg list, they got word out about the para. Commtee member L. Craig Schoonmaker suggted the word “Pri” for the event. “A lot of people were very reprsed, they were nflicted ternally, and didn’t know how to e out and be proud. That’s how the movement was most eful, bee they thought, ‘Maybe I <em>should</em> be proud,’” Schoonmaker <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">said</a> 2015.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p>The para was schled for June 28, 1970. At first, only a relative few showed up for the para’s 2 PM start time, set to travel 51 blocks, om Greenwich Village to Central Park. Police, there to protect the marchers, had to urge those who did show up to beg at ten after two. As if wag to see if others would go first, people first trickled to the para and then showed up drov, growg lour and lour, eventually formg a thoands-strong mass of people 20 blocks long.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="owcx9ji"></div></div><p>It was, to say the least, a succs.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>“[If] you need some kd of help anizg some type of prott or somethg social jtice?” <a href=">said</a> Larry Nelson, Howard’s partner om 2000 until her ath 2005, who also gave her that aforementned button. “All you had to do was ll her and she’ll jt say when and where.”</p><asi aria-hidn="te" class="PullQuoteEmbedWrapper-sc-EoVjf fQbAzo"><div class="PullQuoteDerativeBorr-sc-iUyOLj fAzNVP"></div><div class="PullQuoteEmbedContent-sc-kTcfhx eoUd"><p>“She was an -your-face activist,” Nelson said 2014. “She fought for anyone who had their rights trampled on.”</p></div></asi><p>Throughout her lifetime, Howard was unapologetic about her sexualy, which clud kk and polyamory, and worked for s to crease unrstandg and visibily related to them. She also worked as a phone sex operator the 1980s, <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">praised</a> by her boss Lisa Verso for “how much fun Brenda had wh phone fantasy. She was able to voice what people wanted,” and was “always up for somethg creative.” Howard -chaired the leather ntgent of the Send Natnal March on Washgton for Gay and Lbian Rights 1987. Her iend Marla Stevens remembered one particular jail time fondly. In 1991, Howard was prottg wh ACT-UP Atlanta bee a lbian staffer the state attorney general’s office was fired due to Geia’s sodomy laws. Stevens and Howard were thrown jail, later “readg steamy novels aloud to the assembled grrlz and beg as much of a pa the rear as possible so they'd not want to hold any longer than absolutely necsary,” Stevens <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">wrote</a>.</p><p>As a pneer the movement to advance bisexual cln, Howard was part of the legatn that worked to get “Bi” add to the tle of the 1993 March on Washgton so would bee “March on Washgton for Lbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights.” Beforehand, the march had only foced on gay and lbian rights. Decryg the many myths surroundg bisexualy, phg to the spotlight, and rallyg for s support ongog queer narrativ was a strong part of Howard’s activism, though she also mpaigned heavily for LGBTQ+ rights general, as well as women’s rights, natnal healthre, equal treatment for people of lor, and rights for those affected by AIDS. “She was an -your-face activist,” Nelson <a href=">said</a> 2014. “She fought for anyone who had their rights trampled on.”</p><p>Howard passed away om lon ncer 2005 — durg Pri on June 28, 2005, to be exact, the 36th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprisg. Nelson survived her and ma a <a href=">vio</a> to honor her longstandg bisexual pri. “Bi the fact that we were together and I am straight,” Nelson’s vio said, “I know if she was alive, she would be here holdg a sign sayg ‘I’m #stillbisexual,’ so I will hold one up for her,” which he do. She was never ‘nfed’ about her sexual inty, he go on to say, and wanted others to acknowledge that she and those like her knew themselv, and that their sexualy was and should be seen as legimate.</p><p>The year Howard passed, the Queens, New York branch of PFLAG iated an award her honor. Now s 14th year, the “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Brenda Howard Award</a>” regniz “an dividual or anizatn that bt exemplifi the visn, prcipals and muny service exemplified by the late LGBT rights activist Brenda Howard and who serv as a posive and visible role mol for the Bisexual Communy.” At the time of s creatn, beme the first award given by a major U.S. LGBTQ+ anizatn that was named after an out bisexual person.</p><p>Bi erasure is still <a href=">all too often</a> a problem faced by the LGBTQ+ muny.
