3 and 5 Gayfield Street is built on the back garn land of 6 Gayfield Square (see separate List scriptn), which was owned by Jam Shaw.
The wall to the rear of 3 and 5 Gayfield Square is part of the origal garn wall of 6 Gayfield Square.
Shaw subsequently veloped part of the garn land of 7 and 8 Gayfield Square 1890, buildg a pact tenement which was named Shaw's Square. Predomantly regular (GAYFIELD PLACE) ELEVATION: 15-bay elevatn; addnal basement storey to right of central paviln. To roof; curved triparte dormers to 3rd and 5th bays om left, flat-roofed dormers to 11th and 14th bay om (GAYFIELD SQUARE) ELEVATION: 5-bay elevatn.

It was part of Jollie's plan om the begng that this should be so; January 1783 he advertised that the Gayfield grounds were to be fed for buildg purpos 'acrdg to a plan.? It also has streetspe and historil value as an element of the Gayfield tate is possible that 5 Gayfield Square was signed by the archect Alexanr Lag; an advert the Edburgh Eveng Courant 1791 proclaimed that Lag was sellg a villa Gayfield Square, but did not specify which one.
