Gaylord found himself Portsmouth 1834, not long after the closure of the origal “Portsmouth Iron Works. " Gaylord, a native of New York, had ma a small fortune the Queensware bs Ptsburgh and had attempted to expand his bs Maysville, Kentucky, where he tablished a store, placg his brother over s management.
Gaylord was passg through Portsmouth after havg settled his affairs Maysville and he mt have been moved by the prospects he saw at the new southern term of the Oh and Erie Canal.
In Frank Rowe's tellg, "While Portsmouth, Gaylord trad his queensware bs Ptsburgh and some mounta land Pennsylvania for the rollg l of the Portsmouth Iron Company. " Gaylord stalled new boilers, replacg the old “knobblg” furnac wh “puddlg” furnac, and changed out “the old fashned” hammers wh “rolls” to create the first “plete and morn rollg l” wt of Ptsburgh, Pennsylvania.
