The moment was a cince. “We bumped to each other at the hotel and I looked at him,” Jharrel tells <em>Teen Vogue</em> over the phone, “and I jt knew.”</p><p>Their bond was immediate. For me specifilly, <em>Moonlight</em> allowed me to actually embody the experienc of people, of others, or people who are stgglg wh their sexualy muni or hoeholds that don't accept their love. It was a challenge and fely gave me sight to that world.</p><p><strong>Jharrel Jerome:</strong> I grew up the Bronx, so I grew up around a lot of people, some who don’t unrstand sexualy or don’t want to be open-md about sexualy. So, was always a le of, “Do I fall wh them? Do I realize that there’s more to ?” Luckily, I have an amazg fay who jt surround me wh love growg up and ma easier for me to love everyone. Before <em>Moonlight</em>, I was fely open-md and aware of everyone’s differenc growg up. But then after <em>Moonlight</em> did change. How did your chemistry wh Ashton ntribute to that?</strong></p><p><strong>JJ:</strong> When to Ashton’s actg, the du is superb. That beach scene, he jt had this thg wh his ey. He didn’t have to say a sgle word. He’d say everythg wh his ey. It’s almost like every time he spoke, I uld hear him sayg, “I need help. I need you.” So that allowed me to jt feel like, I’m his fort. I’m his protectn. Off-set, we really beme bros. He beme a homie of me. We were hangg out Miami, we were really makg memori like, “Wow, we’re here!” So jt sharg that nnectn of, This is new to , this is somethg big for that ma easier for me to jt be fortable around Ashton and realize like, We’re gog through the thgs together. Wh thgs like the beach scene, was like, This isn’t jt Chiron, this is someone who I re about and want to protect. Rather than the ia of one specific person, I took the ia that Kev uld be so many people and shift so many ways. So that’s why on the beach scene he had more of a sensivy to him even though he still had that hard edge bee he grew up hard. He grew up a certa way. And who knows when he began to realize when Chiron was the one for him? What do you want to take on the future?</strong></p><p><strong>AS:</strong> Well first, I thk as a young black artist or as an artist general I've always wanted to see people create a nsc work that's active. There's been a lack of that. I thk that we're livg such a progrsive society now and the next four years wh everythg gog on 's gog to be a real time for art. We're livg a time where people are actually g their platforms and their art to actually make social change. It's a betiful thg.</p><p>I want to ntue to make people feel, to change liv and change mdsets rpect to my art and through characters that I portray. I want to try my bt for the entirety of my reer to do that. It's important and I feel like art n heal people.</p><p>__<em>TV</em>: Have a lot of young people been askg you, "How do I do what you do?" It seems like <em>Moonlight</em> has spired a lot of teenagers, but how do you rpond to that? __</p><p><strong>AS:</strong> This qutn is lerally why I love dog my job and 's why I ially started to act. I want people who have dreams to follow through wh those aspiratns. A lot of kids that have been reachg out to me, have been g up to me… I've been their posn before. It's hontly an amazg feelg. To be able to spire somebody jt by dog somethg that you love, jt by creatg your art is somethg that's very near and ar to my heart. It's been crazy. It's been crazy.</p><p><strong>JJ:</strong> Random teenagers, my own iends, people I ed to know. It’s really humblg, bee ’s like I still have qutns, I want to know thgs, and I’m not a pro. I have so much to learn. So havg iends and random people sayg, “Hey, what n I learn om you?” It’s so satisfyg and spirg bee now I feel like I have a voice. I really n’t wa to spire people. So I would jt enurage my younger self to not re about people's perceptns and to love myself fully, and to keep progrsg and strivg for what you are gog to bee.
