And so I read loads, I read as much as I uld about him, and I read his stori, his poetry, certaly his early poetry as well. And I jt tried to get as much of an unrstandg about who this man was as I uld. What I found fascatg was the amount of ntradictns that arose every tellg. So-and-so would say he was this, another person would say somethg else.”</p><p class="paywall">While based history, the Poe of <em>The Pale Blue Eye</em> is also mostly fantasy. The movie, wrten and directed by <strong>Stt Cooper</strong> (<em>Crazy Heart</em>), was adapted om a 2003 novel by <strong>Louis Bayard.</strong> The tle om Poe’s short story “The Tell-Tale Heart,” wh the mad killer explag that his explible murr was prompted only by the victim’s ky taract. The simple terpretatn is that not all evil has a clear orig or explanatn.</p><p class="paywall">“Much like what Louis Bayard do wh the novel, actually, I realized my approach to workg out Poe has to be the exact same. Take the stuff that’s eful, take the rmatn about him om a very early age—beg very nomadic, he moved around a lot, not havg a sense of belongg—but also have room to vent stuff. All those thgs led me to a far sort of gentler, perhaps more vulnerable place.”</p><p class="paywall">Cooper says a kr, gentler Poe was the ia. It was a chance to show him before—or the procs of—beg warped by the world. “People have an ia about the late Poe, when Poe was a much darker character who drank a great al, and who married his 13-year-old , Virgia, and who died unr myster circumstanc a Baltimore alley, and who bequeathed such wonrfully dark works,” the filmmaker says. “So people have an ia that this is a mented man and a dark man. And I wanted to pos that bee the are his earlier years, he was [different,] which is urtly and Southernly and warm and genero and humoro and wty.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Cooper adms that while wrg the screenplay he origally envisned the role for another actor, <strong>Timothée Chalamet.</strong> “Timmy Chalamet was my Wtern, <em>Hostil,</em> and he was a good pal of me and a wonrful actor, but he was already mted on a uple of films,” Cooper says. “I wanted to shoot a certa time ame that would allow me to bt take advantage of a wtry, very ld and stark and barren landspe. And our dat jt wouldn’t work.” Bad luck turned to good luck, however. “In this particular stance, given that he wasn’t gog to be available, I knew who I thought would be a wonrful Poe. I was immediately stck at how easily he uld play Edgar Allan Poe, a young Poe. But I was also stck by jt his abily. I thought was the bt performance of that year, and has stayed wh me sce.”</p><p class="paywall">Mellg says <em>Scggs</em> was a turng pot. This is his sixth show of the week. He’s a b done wh ,” Mellg says. “At every pot, I thk, when The Artist got to say the words, he would be absolutely mted to . He would live for the moments. Bee when you see him outsi of that performance mo, he is this hnted, ghost-like figure. But somethg happens when he performs.”</p><p class="paywall">Not only do The Artist have the abily to raise money for his own re, but he feels liberated. “In my head, was always the se that this is someone who liv for those moments. Even if he’s performg to a handful of people, don’t matter. He alive those sends of performg bee he needs . He needs to keep himself gog, bee he don’t have much.”</p><p class="paywall">There were tim when Mellg also wasn’t sure he would keep gog. In between <em>Harry Potter</em> and <em>Bter Scggs,</em> he beme a playwright and performed onstage, but the screen rol were ls than plentiful. “I mean, I knew I wanted to do ,” he says. “I knew I wanted to do om a very young age. There’s que a lot of actors my fay, so I had an unrstandg of the realy of as opposed to the glamorized versn. There was somethg about storytellg that was too magil not to engage wh, that ncept of speakg to a fay relative, and then five sends later, I’m watchg them onstage and they’re someone else. It has always been a yearng to get better at storytellg.” He says he has this mon wh his character <em>The Ballad of Bter Scggs.</em></p><p class="paywall">But what do he share wh the shadowy other characters, the disturbed, malevolent, or damaged men he so often brgs to the screen? </p><p class="paywall">“I thk what terts me are the quali that you may not see on the surface, but I know I have, like you say, the shadows si you,” he says. “I thk they’re the gold dt. They’re the thgs you really want to channel ep to and prent to the world. Their voice is somehow lour, bee they haven’t been heard much. Do you know what I mean? Somehow they’re so ep-rooted you that they e out almost a different register.”</p><p class="paywall">Some of the vlent or explosive men are “as far away om me as you uld possibly image,” he says. “But at the same time, there is that sort of manial qualy that I know I do have, that rtls drive. And ’s the same, I gus, wh Poe. The way he thks, ’s like a sttergun. I know I’ve got that also.
