On your own, the night might be an ego-bisg failure; wh an ally, ’s an anecdote. In the first episo of Ey Mortimer’s fizzy new three-part adaptatn of Nancy Mford’s 1945 <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">novel</a> about the English upper class, “The Pursu of Love”—g to <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Amazon Prime Vio</a> on July 30th—the bookish teen-ager Fanny Logan (Ey Beecham) and her more glamoro Lda Radlett (Lily Jam) fd themselv at the stuffit of soiré. It is 1928, and they are wearg awkward taffeta and anza drs and facg a room filled wh the much-olr iends of Lda’s father’s, prented as potential suors for Lda’s olr sister Louisa. The sheltered Fanny and Lda, not yet eighteen and kept largely away om “society,” have spent weeks fantasizg about the event and the possibily of meetg their rpective csh—a “fat, red-faced middle-aged farmer” for Fanny, the Prce of Wal for Lda—on the dance floor. Instead, they are largely ignored, as the men talk low voic about the Hoe of Lords and killg animals. “They’re all so small and <em>ugly</em>,” Lda says, sponntly, clutchg Fanny. “Old and <em>ugly</em>.”</p><p class="paywall">For Lda and Fanny, parti are not jt about socializg. They are also pe rout, offerg a path, via marriage, out of the eezg, fortrs-like Radlett fay home prid over by Lda’s father, known to Fanny as Uncle Matthew (Domic Wt). Uncle Matthew, like many of the weirdo aristocrats the Radletts’ circle, is an old-fashned English eccentric: wealthy and supremely out of touch. “Uncle Matthew knew no middle urse. He eher loved or he hated. And, generally, mt be said, he hated,” Fanny, who narrat the story, tells voice-over. Every morng, Uncle Matthew appears on the hoe’s lawn, crackg a pair of stock whips and hummg along to opera. He is enormoly proud of the grisly “entrenchg tool” hung over his fireplace, which he had ed “to whack to ath eight Germans as they crawled out of a dugout 1915.” We learn that he hat “Huns, ogs, Amerins, Catholics, and all other foreigners,” and that every Christmas he lik to “hunt” his children, chasg them through the sprawlg grounds wh a quartet of “betiful bloodhounds.” “Had the Radletts been poor, he no doubt would have been sent to prison for beatg and refg to te them,” Fanny says, lmly. “Uncle Matthew loathed ted femal, particularly me.”</p><p class="paywall">Fanny liv only part time wh the Radletts and their many unly children. More often, she liv wh her Aunt Ey (Annabel Mulln), who took over her upbrgg after Fanny’s mother ran off at neteen, “feelg herself too betiful and gay to be burned wh a baby.” Fanny’s mother, played wh obv light by Ey Mortimer, swgs to her dghter’s life ocsnally, Fanny says, “like a meteor showerg me wh her extravagance.” Always lghg, always bearg gifts, Fanny’s mother “ran away so often and wh so many different men that she beme known to her fay and iends as the Bolter.” The Bolter seems to be havg a fabulo time: she is shown loungg on a pool float, wavg away her new love, an Italian unt, wh an imper hand. You’ve got so <em>tall!</em>”), wh much younger men, and danc them all unr the table. “Is that Lda I jt saw you wh?” she says to Fanny at one, her exaggerated drawl. “Oh, no, ’s <em>such</em> a mistake to be iends wh girls who are more betiful than one is, darlg. It’s <em>too</em> dispirg.”</p><p class="paywall">The Bolter may be cel, but she’s not altogether wrong. Lda’s looks, and her dogged obssn wh fdg love, threaten to overshadow Fanny and their girlhood iendship. “Poor Lda,” Aunt Ey’s partner, Davey (John Heffernan), tells Fanny. “She has an tensely romantic character, which is fatal for a woman, and also what mak her pletely irristible. Fortunately, most women are madly matter-of-fact. Otherwise, the world uld hardly rry on.” (When Fanny asks, a moment of tenr vulnerabily, “What am I, Davey?” he answers, unsatisfygly, “You’re you, Fanny. You’ll be all right.”) As Lda and Fanny grow olr, they drift apart. Lda soon marri the first man to sweep her off her feet—a rich and entled bore who hat the lower class—and mov to a magnificent hoe London. Fanny falls for a soft-spoken scholar, Aled (Shazad Latif), and settl to a quiet life Oxford. (The urtship: “Gosh, don’t you love a bookshop?” “I do.”) Lda, disillned wh her marriage and new baby, begs spendg all her time at the theatre, dners, night clubs. A ht of judgment, and maybe jealoy, creeps to Fanny’s tellg of Lda’s story. “She beme what’s known as a society bety,” she says. “Fashnable young men cltered around her like be around honey. Buzz, buzz, buzz. Chat, chat, chat.”</p><p class="paywall">There’s somethg barbed, and very hont, about Fanny’s iendship wh Lda. She is sippg on a cktail that she n’t put down. The relatnship is marked by that spiky mix of votn and rivalry that is sometim found between women who have grown up together. As children, they sat a len cupboard and pared measurements: arms, waist, bt, ankl. As adults, they pare hbands, ho, children, iologi. At several moments over the three episos—and there are spoilers ahead—Lda tells Fanny, scerely, “I’m lost whout you.” Still, each is unable to keep om turng the life choic of the other over and over her md, like worryg a stone. When Lda ns away om her awful first hband, Tony (Freddie Fox), she to Fanny for somethg ak to absolutn. “I do thk ’s unfair that when I’m unfahful ’s disgtg, but when Tony is no one bans him om anythg!” Lda says. You n see Fanny stgglg to keep her face refully blank; she’s judgg, no qutn. Later, when Fanny offers, ply, “After all, our children’s well-beg is all that really matters the end,” ’s Lda who is silent. Fanny, heavily pregnant aga, is skeptil about the journey—and the marriage—but burns wh jealoy nohels. She tak personally, as iends do. “It might be easy for you to drop everythg, and leave your life, and be ee, and never face any nsequenc,” Fanny says, furly, “but some of have to stay behd to support our hbands and look after the children.” She acc Lda of abandong her child—and of abandong her. At last, Fanny says the words that they both fear: “I’m always tellg everyone that you’re not like my mother, but you’re jt exactly like her.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">The choic that women make, and the ments that other women make about those choic, was fertile ground for Nancy Mford. By the time she wrote “The Pursu of Love,” her fifth novel and the one that lnched her reer as a wrer, she had watched five sisters e out to society—“the English upper-class versn of the puberty rual”—wh radilly different rults. Partly bee of the turbulent tim which they lived, and partly bee of their strange, ward-facg upbrgg, the Mford sisters chose diametrilly opposed fat (to the endurg fascatn of the Brish public.) One sister ran away om her wealthy first hband to bee the mistrs of Oswald Mosley, the lear of the Brish Unn of Fascists. Another beme a Communist. Another a duchs. Another, an admirer of Hler, shot herself when Bra clared war on Germany. In a wi-rangg group bgraphy, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">The Six: The Liv of the Mford Sisters</a>,” Lra Thompson wr, “One n chant the reers of the Mford sisters the manner of Henry VIII’s wiv, th: Wrer; Countrywoman; Fascist; Nazi; Communist; Duchs.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Nancy Mford, to the horror of some of her sisters, risted marriage for jt over a after her g out. She passed through several social seasons, turng down offers om rpectable young men for her own reasons. You n image her lurkg among the well-drsed men and women, sharp-eyed and a ltle mean, crackg jok and puncturg egos—the kd of person you’d like to s next to at a dner party. In “The Pursu of Love,” she is a perfect gui through this odd, snobbish world, re-creatg the Radletts a fictnalized versn of the Mford childhood, which Thompson scrib, memorably, as “posh-feral.” “The supreme irony about <em>The Pursu of Love</em>,” Thompson wr, “is that, by the time was published, pretty much everythg that reprented was vanishg.”</p><p class="paywall">Mortimer’s adaptatn jects new life to Nancy Mford’s sharpt observatns. Andrew Stt, who played the “hot prit” Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s “<a href=">Fleabag</a>,” is licly entertag as Lord Merl, the Radletts’ over-the-top neighbor, who puts on Dada plays his back yard and dy his pigeons bright lors. (“Oh, no, they love . They <em>love</em> . Mak them so pretty for each other.”) Lord Merl acts as a quasi-mentor to Lda, whose tn he has taken on haphazardly, and he appears at cril moments her life to liver aid and vastatg one-lers. Stt is a joy to watch; he is nsistently, nvcgly vivac—the embodiment of Mford charm. “Fanny, you really are most dreadfully nventnal,” he says, exasperated, at one pot. “We n’t all experience the same sort of domtic bliss that you and, you and”—he falters—“<em>Aled</em> have achieved. Some of mt protect bohemia, irreverence.” And why not? Later, when circumstanc nspire to force Fanny to climb through Lda’s wdow, she leav her own shriekg baby a wicker basket at the ont door. “Shh!” she lls down to . “Please stop screamg. You’re embarrassg me!”</p><p class="paywall">The spectre of Fanny’s mother, the dread Bolter, is a nstant prence, hangg over every cisn the women make. What kd of women are they? What kd of women do they want to be? “I keep thkg about your mother. Am I a bolter?” Lda asks shakily, her marriage crisis. But the prospect of beg a bolter, while clearly terrifyg for Fanny and Lda, is also, on some level, eply allurg. Is she a fallen woman or is she ee? When Lda fally fds love as the mistrs of a dashg Frenchman (played wh wolfish panache by Assaad Bouab, of “<a href=">Call My Agent!</a>”), you n’t help thkg she looks that rare thg: happy.</p><p class="paywall">As war approach, the sttered Radlett clan retreats to the fay home, and Fanny and Lda fd themselv together aga. The Bolter, high spirs, as always, has also joed them, a new lover tow. Earlier, Oxford, she had smoked on Fanny’s uch and told her to leave her children wh a relative. “Don’t let your children get the way of your life, darlg,” she says, blhely. “Do you mean me?” Fanny asks. “No, no. You didn’t get the way.
