There’s </span><a href=" rel>one moment</a><span> that’s very tellg—the host, Frank O’Dowd, is troducg the first show after what was apparently a very ray summer of 1978, and he says that everyone gog to the tumn is “a ltle more Csian than ual…we n all look forward to another seven or eight months of ky whe plexns…so let’s put away our Laste shirts and take out those bomber jackets.”</span></p><p><span>I holed up wh </span><em>ECTV </em><span>episos several nights a row last week. "Stop makg exc and look at yourselv. You have to like do we fuck the bh at night? .. don't have any rponsibili [like raisg kids] ...I thk ghetto are a ad-end for any group—gays, Jews, Blacks....I don't see what fuckg the back room of the Anvil gets n't wake up at 60 and say, 'Oh, poor me' [for havg no other life].. got what you n you feel good about yourself as a person after you've been pissed on a bathtub?"</p><p>I fely want that last le on a T-shirt. But serly—I had such vlently mixed feelgs about Larry's words here (whose harshns is tempered somewhat by his own admtg that even he n't seem to sta a long-term relatnship). On one hand, uld he not appreciate the celebratn, the joy, the liberatn and ecstasy that was gay life 1978 NYC? AIDS probably ma him feel grimly vdited!, I thought bterly. </p><p>And yet at the same time—'s hard not to love him for wantg more for his people, for wantg our full personhood wh society. The Village and Fire Island the 1970s sound like enchanted plac I'd time-travel back to (temporarily) a mute, but 1978, they were among prec few plac where gay men uld be themselv whout fear of vlence, firg or other repercsns. They weren't "real," many sens of the word. And 's heartbreakg that took the plague of the 1980s and 1990s to all but force society to reckon wh gay personhood—a bter bridge that brgs to where we are today.</p><p><span>As I watched episos of </span><em>ECTV</em><span>, I took to Googlg everyone I "met" to see who was still alive. Prec few, fact. And yet I still marvel at this time psule that I did not even know existed—this prec pendium chroniclg jt a few magil, sexy, mpy—and, as Steven says himself below, somewhat rnily </span><em>nocent</em><span> years, even if some people were gettg fisted and pissed on. As much as today's Gen Zs seem obssed wh so much of the pop culture and inography of the '90s, young queer culture the 70s was equally fascated wh the vville and Hollywood ins of the 1930s and 1940s.
