GREEDY SPOE, NEEDY PARENT: THE MARAL DYNAMICS OF GAY, LBIAN, AND HETEROSEXUAL INTERGENERATNAL CAREGIVERS

Sherw took Bird out to dner, and suggted they jo forc on had known each other for years, and their iendship had solidified the mid-1990s, when Bird clud Sherw’s says a volume about the ntroversy surroundg a planned Smhsonian exhib of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the first atomic 1957 photo of Oppenheimer at the Instute for Advanced Rooney/Associated PrsBut there was one plitn. Rpons of 33 homosexual (gay) fathers were pared wh those of 33 heterosexual (nongay) fathers on the Iowa Parent Behavr Inventory, an empiril measure of dimensns of parentg behavr.
Gay fathers did not differ signifintly om nongay fathers their reported gree of volvement nor timacy level wh children. Gay fathers tend to be more strict, more rponsive to children's needs, and to provi reasons for appropriate behavr to children more nsistently than nongay fathers.
However, gay men and lbian women’s recent accs to marriage prents new qutns about the genred maral dynamics of tergeneratnal regivg. The fdgs provi new sight to the termgled rol of “greedy” marriag and “needy” parents, where maral negotiatns around regivg vary by genr for gay, lbian, and heterosexual maral dyads. Keywords: Gay, lbian, and heterosexual spo; genr tergeneratnal regivg; maral dynamicsAdult children unrtake nearly half of the daily regivg labor performed for agg adults (Pquart & Sörensen, 2011; Seltzer & Bianchi, 2013; Swartz, 2009).
GAY DADS MAY BE MORE VOLVED THEIR CHILDREN'S LIV
We take a step forward by explorg the dynamics of spoal support provisn wh gay, lbian, and heterosexual marriag where at least one adult child performs tergeneratnal regivg. We analyze qualative dyadic data om 90 -pth terviews wh midlife dividuals 15 gay marriag, 15 lbian marriag, and 15 heterosexual marriag. Studi that rely on qualative and nonreprentative sampl suggt that gay and lbian midlife adults (much like heterosexual adults) provi tensive re to fay members such as parents (Cayleff, 2008; Price, 2011).
For example, qualative rearch shows that lbian women (Parslow & Hegarty, 2013; Price, 2011) as well as gay men (Cron, Ward, Pugh, Kg, & Price, 2011; Washgton et al., 2015) often provi re to parents even the face of homophobic rejectn om parents. The prr studi do not exame genr differenc the ways that gay men and lbian women approach the provisn of re to parents. Here, we discs the rearch fdgs and ploy a genr relatns ame (Sprger et al., 2012) to theorize how maral dynamics around tergeneratnal regivg operate gay and lbian marriag—a topic virtually untouched empiril rearch.
