At a long table the dimly l garn of Can Domgo, a rtrant the southern hills, two dozen people picked over the remas of a genero dner: ravli, veal Milane, ponata. Gerd Janson, a forty-five-year-old German d.j. wh urtly manners, asked me if I wanted a ltle more fish. He was drsed like one of the Royal Tenenbms, a neck srf and a whe mp-llar shirt tucked to chos. I was full, but he sisted. “The fish is so lic—and ’s a <em>long</em> night,” he remd me.</p><p class="paywall">At the center of the table was another d.j., Mlan Solomun—the reason for this long night and many others. Solomun is a forty-six-year-old German-Bosnian-Croat om Hamburg who looks like a Visigoth chief or a retired lebacker: six feet three and meaty, wh a grayg beard and long dark hair that he often wears pulled back. He is known to lns of ravers by only his last name, and to a circle of timat by only his first. At Can Domgo, he was Mlan, soft-spoken and attentive wh the Chablis. After dner, he would bee Solomun, master key to the pleasure of thoands.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">This summer, several people scribed Solomun to me as the “kg of Ibiza.” He profs to hate this appellatn, but has some mer. Sce 2013, except for the <a href="><em>vid</em></a> pse, he has played at Pacha, the island’s olst night club, at least twenty Sundays a year. (The parti beg at midnight and n until dawn on Monday.) His rincy, lled Solomun+1, so domat the scene that other clubs plan their schl around . <em>Ibiza Spotlight</em>, a night-life gui, recently <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">lled Solomun+1</a> the “centre of the universe.”</p><p class="paywall">At Can Domgo, Solomun turned to Janson, sed, and said, thickly accented English, “Hey, ’s nearly twelve—why aren’t you Pacha?” Other clubs on the island hire several d.j.s for a sgle eveng, and at larger venu d.j.s play simultaneoly different rooms. Wh more nam on the bill, there is a better chance that clubbers will spot someone they like. Pacha has one ma room, and Solomun prefers a simple formula. He believ that dancers yearn to be taken on a mil journey, and that the way to lead them is to create a long, volvg set. When Solomun plays, he v only one other d.j., his “+1”—tonight would be Janson. The gut plays om midnight until 2:30 <em class="small">a.m.</em>, Solomun plays om 2:30 <em class="small">a.m.</em> until 5 <em class="small">a.m.</em>, and then the pair perform together, or “back-to-back,” for the fal two hours, fishg at 7 <em class="small">a.m</em>.</p><p class="paywall">Janson had been aware that midnight was approachg, but he wasn’t one to make a fs. The next day, Janson would take three roundabout flights to get to Corsi, for a gig that eveng. “I’m a workg-class kid,” he said. “I have to work.”</p><p class="paywall">At midnight, a Pacha employee drove Janson away a van. The other ders were no sh: Pl Bor, Solomun’s tour manager, who is almost always by his si; a famo German actor; a currency trar om London, who met Solomun on a health retreat; a Croat tech guy who liv L.A. Typilly, Solomun don’t arrive at Pacha until nearly 2 <em class="small">a.m</em>. When the check arrived, Solomun paid, and everyone returned to their villas to shower and change before the night—or the morng—began earnt.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Nety mut after leavg Can Domgo, Solomun arrived at Pacha a h black T-shirt, black pants wh a whe stripe down the si, Air Jordans, and a Yanke p. He was rryg USB sticks, ntag tens of thoands of tracks, a pk Aristots purse that he’d spotted an Ibiza supermarket earlier the summer. Solomun started mixg the vyl era, when d.j.s lugged box of rerds to their events. He told me that he remaed, at heart, an “analog guy”—he hated that clubbers rerd vios on cell phon rather than immersg themselv the experience. Reachg the d.j. booth om the street feels like a psychelic re-creatn of the Steadim shot “GoodFellas”: after walkg past a secury guard, you enter a garn filled wh sculptur of unirns, giraff, and naked women, then follow a wdg rridor, led wh red lights, that leads you past a btlg kchen and mixed-sex bathrooms to the ma room of the club, where you pass through the V.I.P. area and, fally, down a small flight of stairs. The loudns is engulfg. Mmeric hexagonal light panels rise and fall over the dance floor rponse to the mic, makg the club feel like a livg anism. The Brish signers who created the display, Helen Swan and Chris Carr, were spired by Ée Durkheim’s 1912 book, “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Elementary Forms of Relig Life</a>,” which scrib “llective effervcence”— which dividuals bee a group by munitg through actn alone.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The booth is about thirty feet wi and has s own small bar for the d.j. and his iends. Two club employe guard entry, and no amount of money or celebry guarante admissn. You n’t prs mic on the d.j., or get too close or too dnk. Bor, the tour manager, overse what he lls “booth polics,” and any actn of the unwrten n lead to ejectn. The tly elect are ved to take an ocsnal shot of tequila wh Solomun. The brand on his rir is Clase Azul Reposado, which the club brgs specifilly for him. Solomun sometim drks more than thirty shots of tequila durg a night at the cks, wh no visible change his sobriety.</p><p class="paywall">By the time Solomun arrived, Janson was at the apex of his set. He fsed at the four cks ont of him: they were equipped wh circular jog wheels, for navigatg a particular track; slirs, for adjtg tempo and volume; and an array of dials and buttons that perform var functns, om eight-bar loops to dmrolls. Pacha, which n hold more than three thoand people, was at the edge of s pacy. In ont of the booth, general-admissn clubbers, most of whom had paid seventy ros a ticket, bounced around. Behd Janson was the V.I.P. area, where securg the bt table—close to the d.j. but wh space to dance—n st twenty thoand ros.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Solomun and Janson hugged, and Janson quickly turned back to his ntrols. D.j.’g requir ncentratn. One is not only selectg tracks but also splicg them together tempo, and a sympathetic key. Moreover, morn cks sentially allow a d.j. to remix tracks while playg them, and clubbers now expect some improvised wizardry wh a set. Durg the next hour, several other proment d.j.s joed Solomun and Janson the booth, among them three Germans—Adam Port, &ME, and Rampa—known llectively as Keemik. They produce and play silky, melodic hoe, and this summer they were the hottt thg dance mic. (&ME and Rampa produced two tracks on Drake’s latt album, “<a href=">Hontly, Nevermd</a>.”) They also equently llaborate wh Solomun on remix. The tr had jt flown om New York, and they were headlg the next night at DC10—an fluential club near the airport. They all looked exhsted, but, like aspirants a medieval urt, they’d e to Pacha to pay their rpects.</p><p class="paywall">At 2:30 <em class="small">a.m</em>., Janson was playg his fal track, a buzzy remix of the 1984 Belgian dis number “Love Gam.” Solomun cued up his first track—“<a href=">Dos Blok</a>,” by the Spanish producer Orn Agassi—then listened to on his headphon to sure that s beat matched the outgog rhythm. Many ravers near the cks had pupils like bath plugs, and they greeted Solomun’s approachg set ecstatilly. The roilg hook of “Dos Blok” poured to the club. Like almost everybody prent, I raised a hand the air. While dog so, I dropped my notebook, then spent an unfortable mute crawlg amid dancg feet to retrieve . Solomun flashed a th se but hardly acknowledged the clamor. He was at work.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Ibiza, a geo Spanish island the Mederranean, is forted wh p and ged wh dramatic v. When Phoenician merchants first arrived, the seventh century B.C., they named the island ’<em>ybsm</em>, after B, the Egyptian god associated wh mic, dance, and sex. ’<em>Ybsm</em> beme Ibiza. In recent s, has been a statn for transgrsive terlopers: beatniks, jazz fiends, artists, refuge, hippi, celebri, yogis, ravers. <a href=">Walter Benjam</a>, who spent time Ibiza the neteen-thirti, ma note of the scriptn on the thedral’s sundial: “<em>Ultima multis</em>,” or “The last day for many.” The sundial has sce distegrated, but s msage uld serve as a hedonist’s credo: Seize the night.</p><p class="paywall">Clubs began attractg people to the island, which is about twice the size of Martha’s Veyard, the mid-twentieth century. Acrdg to “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Dope the Age of Innocence</a>,” the Irish émigré Damien Enright’s vivid memoir about the unterculture era Ibiza, jazz was then the hot sound. In 1961, Enright wrote, the island’s night life was fuelled by Benzedre and alhol, and centered on a bar named Domo, om which poured “the wilst, et, most novative mic most of had ever heard.”</p><p class="paywall">In 1966, two brothers, Rirdo and Pi Urgell, tablished a night club lled Pacha outsi Barcelona. The name was suggted by Rirdo’s wife, who predicted that the club’s profs would allow him to “live like a pasha.” (Not long ago, the Urgells sold the Pacha Group to private-equy terts for three hundred and fifty ln ros.) In 1973, the brothers opened an Ibiza outpost, and beme a meltg pot where hippi hung out wh film directors and pop stars danced wh fishermen.</p><p class="paywall">At the time, the prevailg mic was dis, which was played largely g nventnal stments. Tracg the genis of morn dance mic, wh s electronic beats and sounds, is like tryg to fd the center of a cloud, but most enthiasts agree on certa ton: Roland dm mach, David Manco’s Manhattan loft parti, <a href=">Kraftwerk</a>. In the early eighti, a group of Black Chigo d.j.s steeped dis, R. & B., and synth-pop began playg lolly produced dance mic at parti. The Chigo sound had a strong 4/4 beat, a ltle bounce, and often soulful vols, and ually pulsed at about a hundred and twenty beats per mute. That was hoe mic. An electronic-mic scene also grew Detro, wh harr, sparser tracks that often lacked vols. The track was spare but passnate, and Aledo fell love. At Amnia, he began mixg the new hoe sounds wh dis, flamen, and other genr. Many dancers gmented the mic wh Ecstasy—a synthetic dg that had recently arrived on the island, and which promoted powerful fellow-feelg.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In 1987, several Brish d.j.s on vatn—Danny Ramplg, Pl Oakenfold, Johnny Walker, and Nicky Holloway—took pills and listened to Aledo at Amnia. They beme evangelists for hoe mic, and have been wily creded wh brgg to Bra. (The “Ibiza Four” were important, but the story disunts many other bridg built between dis and electronic mic Europe; for stance, d.j.s at the Hamburg gay club Front were <a href=">playg hoe rerds</a> at least two years before the Brs heard Aledo.) The new genre both offered pe and mand mment. You spent hours dancg wh sweaty strangers, thrall to a seri of rerds that flowed seamlsly to one another.</p><p class="paywall">By the mid-neti, many new night clubs had opened Ibiza. Low-st airl ma the island an affordable statn. If you loved electronic mic, an Ibiza vatn soon beme a non-negotiable part of the summer. For top d.j.s, offered ser money—and a path to ternatnal notoriety. By the turn of the lennium, Oakenfold was playg ncerts at Wembley Stadium.</p><p class="paywall">In 2019, more than four ln tourists vised Ibiza, which has a populatn of a hundred and fifty thoand. Juan Miguel Costa, the head of Ibiza’s tourist board, told me that, though he hoped many visors would disver the island’s beach and rtrants, “Ibiza is very known <em>bee</em> of electronic his thirti. Born Yugoslavia, he grew up the Altona district of Hamburg, Germany. He scribed himself to me as a “street kid” who was crazy about soccer. At an early age, he learned to fight. His father worked nstctn; his mother was a seamstrs. Both were Bosnian Croats, and most of their neighbors were immigrants, too. In the fay’s first Hamburg apartment, there was no shower—Solomun’s father had to build one—and their only German neighbor was a hero addict. Another neighbor, an alholic, beat his wife; Solomun remembers listeng for noise, se his fay need to terce. Fots Karamanidis, Solomun’s bs partner, and his clost iend sce childhood, rells Altona as “a jungle.”</p><p class="paywall">In the mid-eighti, when Solomun was around ten, the fay moved to another rough area. Soon afterward, Solomun’s olr , who was twenty-two, dropped by wh a gift: a ssette tape rerd at a lol club where the was iendly wh the d.j. “I didn’t know anythg about the mic,” Solomun said. “I mean, was dis sh. I didn’t unrstand . But what I did unrstand was: this mic is not on the rad. It ma me cur.”</p><p class="paywall">A lol youth center held a dis night every Wednday. When Solomun was fourteen, an adult at the center noticed that he was terted learng how the turntabl worked, and entsted him wh a small budget to buy rerds: R. & B., funk, hip-hop, soul. At the events, the boys were focsed maly on chasg girls, and vice versa, but ocsnally someone moved to the rhythm. Solomun saw each dancer as a victory: “I was, like, ‘I don’t know what I’m dog here, but <em>somethg</em> is happeng.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun eventually stopped playg dis night, but he ntued llectg rerds. He had no thoughts of a reer mic. He was good enough at soccer that the ach of Germany’s natnal youth team exprsed tert, but Solomun said that he would play only for Yugoslavia. His fay returned home every summer. In 1992, when Solomun was seventeen, war broke out Bosnia, and his fay’s ty Hamburg apartment filled wh relativ who were fleeg the nflict. Solomun wanted to go fight; his father told him not to be stupid.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun scrib the perd that followed as lost years. (He won’t elaborate, except to say that he abandoned sports, mic, and school.) When he was his early twenti, his father dragged him “off the streets” to work on a nstctn crew. Solomun remembers stg a portable toilet on a buildg se, wonrg if the rt of his life would volve mdls labor. He told himself, “I have to at least <em>try</em> to do somethg else.”</p><p class="paywall">Fatih Ak, a film director who is two years olr than Solomun, and who also grew up Altona, had jt released “Short Sharp Shock,” a gangland noir that drew parisons to <a href=">Mart Srse</a>. Solomun was spired—the movie proved that someone om his background uld “follow their creativy.” He took entry-level jobs the film dtry, and wh four years he’d learned enough to produce his own short—a chaotic crime per. Meanwhile, he was fallg eper love wh electronic mic. A iend had taken him to a warehoe party Hamburg where the d.j. played techno, and the sound stantly hooked him.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">At twenty-six, Solomun d.j.’d at another iend’s birthday party, a fifth-floor apartment Hamburg’s red-light district. He played funk, pop, hip-hop, hoe, techno. The mic spilled out the open wdows, iatg an impromptu street party. Everyone om tourists to sex workers started dancg. The experience was too much fun not to repeat. Solomun anized a ticketed party an art gallery. A hundred and fifty people bought tickets; five hundred showed up. He eventually rolved to m to mic. Wh his paltry savgs, he bought a cheap puter and asked a lol hip-hop producer to help him learn digal-posn software. “I started om zero, no money,” he told me. “Sometim I had five ros and had to ci—do I buy a pack of cigarett or a kebab?”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun began to play at small Hamburg venu, which paid a few hundred ros a gig. Durg this perd, he met several people who rema his clost iends and advisers, cludg Daniel Schoeps, his manager. Wh a few years, Solomun and the iends were nng their own club Hamburg, lled <em class="small">ego</em>, and had found a rerd label, DIYnamic. Even now, when the strgs enter on “Story of My Life,” Solomun fds himself tears.</p><p class="paywall">When he was his mid-thirti, his mic went ternatnal: a stately remix of Noir & Haze’s “<a href=">Around</a>” was one of the most succsful dance tracks of 2011. That summer, he was offered a gig at El Corso, an Ibiza hotel. A “party island” seemed to him like a visn of Hell, but his partners DIYnamic persuad him to go. Solomun played at the club for a few hours, then spent the rt of the weekend explorg. He was overwhelmed by the priste beach and by the openns of the mic scene. The followg year, Solomun was playg sold-out parti at an Ibiza club named Sankey’s. They also hated the mic. In 2011, Rirdo Urgell lamented the “monotono sound and volume” of the club scene, addg, “It’s bodi squeezed together, ’s a ltle masochistic. . . . The great fect of this mic is that has to be acpanied by dgs.”</p><p class="paywall">The Urgells’ views appalled Pacha’s booker, a Br named Danny Whtle, who revered hoe mic and believed that the rise d.j. fe was jtified. There were now dozens of subgenr of hoe and techno, each wh a voted followg. To outsirs, and sometim even to fans, the differenc among subgenr n seem fimal. (Explag the gap between, say, ep-hoe and tech-hoe n make one feel like Poloni offerg Hamlet actors for “pastoral-il,” “historil-pastoral,” “tragil-historil,” and “tragil-il-historil-pastoral” plays.) But Whtle unrstood that clubbers were fiercely loyal to d.j.s whose tast matched their own. As he saw , a headler was worth a fifth of an eveng’s gross: if a night regularly ma half a ln ros, as some at Pacha did, the d.j. should be paid a hundred thoand ros. In 2012, the Urgells orred Whtle to rce d.j. salari. Whtle qu, as did four of the club’s top d.j.s.</p><p class="paywall">Pacha was sudnly sperate. Steve Hulme, who took over bookg after Whtle rigned, began chasg Solomun for the 2013 season. Hulme felt that Solomun would thrive Pacha’s Sunday slot. “It was the kd of mic girls liked,” Hulme remembers. “There was jt a vibe about him—there was a vibe about the label, the name Solomun was really ol.”</p><p class="paywall">Hulme ma Solomun’s team a “massive offer.” Solomun’s manager asked for “a ltle b more.” A al was stck. Unlike other d.j.s, Solomun has also cled all paid brandg opportuni, which uld have multiplied his wealth, bee he preferred to be known only for mic. Solomun told me, “I’m blsed that I don’t have to thk about money now.” But, he emphasized, “I was happy <em>before</em>.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-4 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Solomun’s +1 ncept was risky, bee pend so heavily on his allure. He also sisted on resigng Pacha’s ma room, bee, as he told me, “the feng shui wasn’t right.” The d.j. booth was near a balny and faced both the dance floor and the V.I.P. area. Solomun wanted to play directly to people who had bought general-admissn tickets, and wh his back to the V.I.P.s. He asked for the booth to be moved to the center of the club. His ntract addnally stipulated that he be the only d.j. allowed to make e of this arrangement, and so his bpoke booth was wheeled on Sundays and wheeled out on Monday afternoons. “He wasn’t to the V.I.P.— was a ltle b of a slap on the wrist for them,” Hulme said. “But turned out the V.I.P.s absolutely loved , bee they felt like they were the booth <em>wh</em> him.”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun’s first season at Pacha ma a small prof. By the send season, every Solomun+1 night was full. Plutocrats fought for space behd the d.j. booth. Hulme remembers sellg a sectn of the V.I.P. area for fifty thoand ros to a group that left the club after two hours. The sectn was then rold. Hulme also rells that celebri, cludg the Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo, had to wa to enter the booth. “It beme the toast of the town,” Hulme said. “Half the pl-on, we’d never heard of. . . . It beme very apparent that was all about him.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Why would anybody go to a club pecially to listen to a d.j. playg other people’s rerds? Until my mid-thirti, this qutn nfound me. I enjoyed a wi variety of genr, but—apart om a mercifully brief jungle phase high school—I hardly ever listened to dance mic, which I experienced mostly through sgl on the rad. It seemed facile to me—a manipulative sugar sh. Then, 2017, my wife and I left our kids wh their grandmother and vised Ibiza wh iends. It was my first trip there. That Sunday, we went to Pacha for Solomun+1.</p><p class="paywall">When Solomun began his set, I was transfixed. This was no sugar sh. I didn’t know any of the mic, I didn’t even unrstand some of , and there were stretch when I didn’t take much pleasure what I was hearg. The mic was prented as one long phrase, ntually promisg a rolutn that never materialized— was like beg trapped si a five-hour Bach fugue. But along the way there were moments of melodic grace, beguilg transns, and a nstant, bone-shakg beat. <em>Oontz, oontz, oontz, oontz.</em> The rt of my group went home at some pot, but I stayed, beiendg a ntgent of sweaty Argenteans. We remaed on the dance floor until 7 <em class="small">a.m</em>. I emerged onto the siwalk, astonished by the morng sunshe and totterg like a newborn foal—a nvert.</p><p class="paywall">After that, I dived to dance mic, and my wife soon ught the bug, too. We raved forts, wareho. We learned to mix and played at parti. The experienc were both theraptic and regenerative. The memory of a sgle night out uld sta through dark wter months of school mut, work adl, even personal cris. I loved all the mglg stori a night club—stori that seemed vivid the moment but dissolved when the lights me on. Solomun also loved this drama, I later disvered. He said, of <a href=">Bergha</a>, the Berl club, “There is no filmmaker, not even Taranto, who uld pture all the crazs there. The erotis!”</p><p class="paywall">I’m forty-two. My kids are ten and seven. It’s a strange kd of midlife awakeng, but I am clearly not alone. In the crowd at Pacha, there seem to be as many thirty- and fortysomethgs as twentysomethgs. I often spot people their sixti. In 2013, when Edward Frenkel, a Berkeley profsor of mathematics, was about the age that I am now, he beme a fan of Solomun’s, and spent some nights the d.j. booth at Pacha. “He never played the same way,” Frenkel relled. “It took me some time to realize that he actually had a much stronger bond wh his dience than most d.j.s did.” It wasn’t that Solomun gave listeners exactly what they wanted, Frenkel said—he simply knew “what channel of munitn was open wh this particular dience, and would operate along that channel.” A Solomun set, he told me, returns “to that space we had as children, mmerized by mic, mmerized by lookg at the starry night sky.” He went on, “The functn of the d.j. is to pri over the ceremony. He is the prit, or the shaman.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">The afternoon followg his night wh Gerd Janson at Pacha, Solomun texted me, “Morng :)” It was nearly five. He ved me to jo him at a spa. Half an hour later, we were changg to swimsus the locker room of a five-star hotel, headg for a Fnish sna and an ice bath. Solomun explaed that his Monday viss to the spa were the most important part of his week: he sweated out the night before. He put on a robe and flip-flops, and walked upstairs at a regal pace, ocsnally stoppg to say hello to someone who’d regnized him. In the sna, he put ice on the heater and drizzled the cub wh sential oils that he’d brought. Solomun swirled a towel above his head, to move the air, and we sat there, perspirg, as he reflected on the prev eveng at Pacha. “Such a good party,” he said. “The vibe was so nice.” Enargly, he pronounced “vibe” wh a “w.”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun isn’t a natural performer the d.j. booth. “I don’t like attentn,” he told me. “To be a d.j. is agast who I am.” But, over the years, he has learned a few mov. Sometim he solemnly rocks om foot to foot as he builds a set; when a beat drops, he greets like a nductor brgg the strg sectn, or a garner attackg a stubborn branch wh hedge trimmers. At moments, he skips around the booth dog a semi-ironic, elbows-out dad dance. The prev night, he had been mostly this playful mo.</p><p class="paywall">In past years, a good night at Pacha would have been followed by an after-party. Schoeps claims that, the summer of 2013, Solomun played thirty-six after-parti, cludg one after every Solomun+1 show. A Pacha set would blend to a Monday after-party, which might—after a few hours of sleep—flow to another ticketed party on Tuday, at Sankey’s, lastg until Wednday morng. Solomun was motivated to play for so long, he explaed, bee the end of a night felt a ltle like ath. On his cks, the timer was always untg down to the end of a track. If he didn’t cue up another, the sound would simply stop—an unthkable prospect when people were still dancg. “It’s never the last track,” he said. “It’s never over.”</p><p class="paywall">Karamanidis, who has attend many of the after-parti, offered a public-service ratnale: Solomun often felt guilty that regular clubbers had not only paid high pric for their tickets but had also been gouged on drks. It blazed for twenty hours. When police me for a fourth time, they warned Crvenkovic that if there were more plats he risked gog to jail. This msage was munited to Solomun, who said, “O.K.—two more tracks.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-5 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Sometim Solomun nducts a marathon set at a night club. In December, 2017, at Space Miami, he played for twenty-seven hours, spe havg been booked for jt four. How was this physilly possible? He explaed that he took bathroom breaks durg longer tracks. People brought food. He drank water, tequila, gger shots, and ocsnally took small amounts of Ecstasy. At forty-six, Solomun needs to be more mdful of his health. He receiv equent massag—what he lls “lazy yoga”—and he often plays tennis. (Solomun has a powerful game; when we played doubl this summer, he h a forehand that left a welt on my wrist.) At the spa, we moved on to the ice bath. Solomun immersed himself immediately, but I was wary of a heart attack. “Don’t thk about —jt do ,” he gently mand.</p><p class="paywall">Afterward, we lounged on daybeds. Solomun noted that a few hours the German d.j. Koze was playg at DC10, the club by the airport, and suggted that we go there together. When Solomun was a fledglg d.j., he idolized Koze, an olr man who had emerged om the same Hamburg scene. Although I love Koze’s mic, I was so tired that I uld barely keep my ey open. But ’s hard sayg no to Solomun. Several other exhsted iends, who’d also been at Pacha, were dragooned to attendg as well. “It’s all for one and one for all,” Bor, the tour manager, told me. “If Mlan is gog out, the whole crew is gog out.”</p><p class="paywall">At 10 <em class="small">p.m.,</em> Bor dropped off at DC10. Koze was playg an outdoor space lled the Garn, and took Solomun half an hour to reach the d.j. booth, bee so many people wanted to talk to him, or shake his hand, or take a selfie wh him. Taylor Swift uldn’t have created more of a stir.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun listened to Koze om the crowd booth, alongsi Rampa and &ME, who were d.j.’g later that night. Solomun admired Koze’s set, particularly for how met s dience: a crowd of people, many of whom had jt arrived at the club, the open air, before midnight. After a while, Solomun turned to me and said, “So good! It’s light, ’s bouncy.” This dited that the d.j. red more about the dancers than about his ego, Solomun explaed. Koze fished wh one of his own tracks, “Drone Me Up, Flashy,” recently remixed by &ME—ne mut of floaty, transcennt hoe.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun wanted to go home, but took him nearly an hour to reach the r. “It’s absurd,” he said. “People say betiful thgs to me . . . but I want to fet the send they fish the sentence.” It ma him unfortable that a d.j. “who didn’t even play an stment” should be so venerated—he was jt one no a galaxy of mic. Solomun also regnized that, though some people were attuned to his gifts as a d.j. or a producer, others were reactg only to his celebry. Gettg to the r, he seemed upset. “Comg here is ten tim more strsful than playg my own night,” he said. “In Pacha, I’m <em>protected</em>.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Solomun has rented the same elegant, enormo villa Ibiza for the past six years. Until last summer, he shared the hoe wh members of his management team. He now liv there alone, except for the twelve feral ts he feeds. Solomun has had ser relatnships wh women, but he is currently sgle. The morng after our night at DC10, I walked to his kchen. There were several pans that need washg. A well-ed German py of Jamie Oliver’s “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">15-Mute Meals</a>” sat on the unter.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun don’t own a hoe, though he has bought two apartments for his mother, Croatia and Hamburg. He recently searched for a place Lisbon, but he didn’t fd anythg that he wanted to buy. Wh his schle, ’s difficult to settle somewhere. Between May and October, he liv Ibiza but performs around Europe. In the fall, he travels to Central and South Ameri, where he has many fans. By the end of wter, he’s back Europe, spendg two months makg mic and refg his taste for the summer season. Then ’s May, and Ibiza, aga.</p><p class="paywall">“Ibiza feels like my home now,” Solomun told me. “But, when I meet the right person, <em>then</em> I will know where my home is.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-6 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">He was on a ll when I arrived at the villa, so Bor took me to the livg room. The terr was whewashed the <em>ibicen</em> style. Takeout ntaers for Solomun—bought and livered by Bor—were wag on the ffee table. The wdows were open to a terrace, and the chirp of cidas flood . A giant pair of Air Jordans had been kicked off haphazardly.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun entered the room. After greetg me, he walked to a rner, where he l a ndle on what rembled an altar. Ins of J, Mary, and two angels had been arranged above a fireplace. After lightg the ndle, Solomun addrsed the altar, crossed himself, and walked away. I hadn’t known that he was relig. He showed me a photograph om when he had met the Pope, 2019, and said that he liked to keep a ndle burng day and night on the altar. “It protects me,” he said.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun then reunted a story about his fah. Bosnian Croats are Catholics a majory-Mlim untry. In Hamburg, he received his First Communn at the age of ten, but he rarely attend Mass. When he was twenty-three, sponnt, and workg nstctn, he spent a day off wanrg the streets. A “force, a power,” guid him to a church.</p><p class="paywall">Insi, he regnized the prit who had given him his First Communn. Solomun said that he was lost. The prit gave him a three-month seri of activi to reawaken him. For example, he was to vis a lol Spanish uple twice a week and let them talk about their life; he should not ask qutns but simply absorb their stori. (It’s easy to image him dog this—unually for a celebry, he is an excellent listener.) After three months, Solomun took Communn aga, and mted to beg a “good person.”</p><p class="paywall">It’s odd to thk of someone who parti as hard as Solomun as a man of God. But fah, he says, “fills me up.” Many of Solomun’s clost associat are also relig. Karamanidis spent four months a monastery Greece, and me back, Solomun’s words, a “shg person.” Schoeps, Solomun’s manager, is also a Christian, and sgs sacred mic a choir; on a recent weekend, he was Now!”) He cued up “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">I Am Free</a>,” a phoric track by his equent llaborator Johann Brecht, who is a classilly traed multi-stmentalist. As the first chords began, the clouds did move, and the sun appeared. Solomun felt goosebumps. He sat on a speaker, potg his fgers at his templ. “God is my master,” the male voice on the track exclaimed. “Love is my master. . . . I am ee!”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In mid-Augt, Solomun drove om his villa to Ibiza’s airport, where a seven-seater Csna Catn VI jet was on the tarmac. Boardg wh him were Bor, two pilots, and me. In the next three days, he would play Sarajevo, Istanbul, and back at Pacha. Durg the summer, Solomun fli only on private plan. He said that he had “planted so many tre . . . a fort” to assuage his rbon guilt, but seemed unlikely that the plantg uld keep pace wh the . On this flight, he rried wh him a wheely suse and a bag filled wh pillows, blankets, and clothps. Solomun requir total darkns to sleep, and the ten mut before he go to bed are often spent png together curtas his hotel room.</p><p class="paywall">The plane took off right after we arrived at the airport. Solomun seems to barely notice the ease wh which he now mov through the world. (On a trip to Ibiza this summer, I waed more than nety mut to clear secury. After a flight wh Solomun Augt, the pilots apologized for makg him a few mut late bee they’d had to fly around a storm.) He told me that he’d hardly slept the prev night, such were his nerv. Many of his relativ, cludg his mother, were attendg the Sarajevo show. Cy thori had ved Solomun to play on the balny of the Mistry of Fance, above the Eternal Flame, a memorial built after the Send World War. To Street, the thoroughfare by the memorial, would be closed off to rs for several hours. There was no +1 on the bill. The prsure weighed on Solomun. He wasn’t sure how to start the set.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-7 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">In the summer, Solomun spends at least two days a week his villa, listeng to new mic sent to him by artists both tablished and unknown, and cidg which tracks to play—and which acts to sign to his label. He tri to follow only his taste. Idris Elba started d.j.’g Ibiza a few years ago, and sent DIYnamic one of his mix, the hope of garnerg a +1 spot at Pacha. Solomun admir Elba’s actg, particularly “The Wire” and “Luther,” but he did not enjoy Elba’s mix. He passed, polely.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun often a plane trip to nsir optns for an upg performance, or to ed tracks. Over the Mederranean, he opened his laptop, put AirPods, and assembled perhaps twenty optns for openg the Sarajevo gig. Ocsnally, he pound the air wh his fist as he listened. I uldn’t hear the mic, and the spasmodic outbursts sometim ma me flch.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun spent most of the flight fiddlg wh one track, which he will release October on DIYnamic: “Yumi,” by the young French producer Notre Dame. The progrsn on “Yumi” walks a le between phoria and melancholy. Solomun was enraptured by the track, and had fished many <a href=">recent sets</a> wh , but on the plane he wonred if he uld better explo the tensn that Notre Dame builds the first nety sends by extendg one sectn. Solomun told me that he wanted to “fd the right dose” of bety. He ma the ed, though he wouldn’t really know if the change worked until he played live. Solomun saved the file, and put the USB stick the Aristots bag.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Solomun’s <a href=">most famo set</a> is one that he rerd for the vio service Boiler Room, om Tulum, Mexi, 2015. It’s been watched nearly sixty ln tim on YouTube. A Solomun set 2022 bears ltle remblance to the one the vio—’s hard to believe ’s the same d.j. The sctive, languid Tulum sound has given way to a harr, faster experience. There are fewer opportuni to sway your hips when Solomun plays now.</p><p class="paywall">Durg the panmic, he began to favor grtier and more energetic mic. When he rumed d.j.’g, his sets reflected this change. Ined, at some recent shows, Solomun has played as many as six tracks by Matt Guy—a producer om Nottgham who creat sledgehammer rave tracks like “Kpa” and “Party Starter.” Solomun’s support has transformed Guy’s reer. In Europe, he is now played on mastream rad. “I’ve always been a massive fan of Solomun,” Guy told me. “But never a ln years would I have expected him to play somethg like ‘Party Starter.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun told me that he was simply broang his outlook. “This year, I really dig and love this kd of neti sound . . . breakbeat, a ltle b trance-y, almost Rob S.-style, but a h way,” he said. “But the days I love more and more styl, and ’s gettg harr and harr to build bridg durg the sets. For me, <em>that’s</em> the big challenge.”</p><p class="paywall">The chang haven’t lighted everyone. On a msage board, one clubber who attend Solomun+1 2022 plaed of the “weird sh” he played; another clared that he was at “the end of the road” wh Solomun. After Solomun played a rowdy set London, a fan wrote on Instagram, “I love your mic you really need to go back to your old stuff though!”</p><p class="paywall">Solomun don’t read onle ments and has social-media acunts only bee they are necsary for work. He says he knows that, when you change your sound, “sometim you’re losg people”—but this n be hard to gge. I have listened to Solomun’s <a href=">Essential Mix</a>, rerd at Pacha 2016, dozens of tim; ntu to surprise me. The moment when a cello enters on a Johann Brecht track lled “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Voix Grave</a>” is chillg and propulsive. (In an e-mail, Brecht scribed that passage, which the cellist Nayon Han teracts wh a nstantly modulatg digal arpegg, as a human and a mache dialogue wh each other.) But a set nnot be signed as a future relic. It is a work of improvisatn that succeeds or fails as flows onto the dance floor. Solomun says that his job is to “create moments.” The evancence is the thg.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-8 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Sam Hoer, a -creator of <a href=">Grand Theft Auto</a> and a founr of Rockstar Gam, first listened to Solomun as a general-admissn clubber Pacha, several years ago. They are now iends, and—among other llaboratns—Solomun is a character the G.T.A. universe, whose sets you n listen to a virtual club. (Solomun wasn’t paid for this; Schoeps scribed the arrangement as “a iendship thg.”) Hoer told me that hearg Solomun live was “breathtakg,” addg, “Mlan has a unique way of takg ntrol and leadg the crowd to his vibe as he slowly and methodilly builds the energy.”</p><p class="paywall">Though Solomun nces that some of his tast have changed, he don’t thk that his sound has bee too hard-edged to enjoy. Wherever he plays, he nsirs the needs of the crowd. Pacha, for stance, is “a sexy club—you n’t play a techno set Pacha.” In June, I went to an open-air venue Ibiza lled Dto, where Solomun played mostly light, melodic hoe at sundown. He wasn’t above playg somethg so surprisg that ma people lgh. Midway through the set, he dropped the why neti hip-hop track “Insane the Bra,” by Cyprs Hill. It was like pumpg helium onto the dance floor.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun told me that he craved variety when producg mic, too. Last year, he released “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Nobody Is Not Loved</a>,” a smooth dance album whose fluenc—synth-pop, die, R. & B.—belied the ferocy of most of his recent live output. This summer, Solomun played me a bossa-nova remix that he’d ma of José González’s “<a href=">Swg</a>,” notg that had ma him as cheerful as any other work he’d done lately. “I like chang,” he explaed. “I want to have fun. If I’m not havg fun, I n’t transm the happs.”</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">In Sarajevo, more than twenty thoand people waed the streets for Solomun’s show. Electns loom Bosnia, and the untry is polilly agile, as old hatreds are rekdled. The European Unn Ambassador to Bosnia, Johann Sattler, who is enuragg talks among factns, had secured funds om the E.U. for Solomun to play. “Culture is a great unifier,” he told me. He knew nothg of Solomun’s mic but did know that many people Bosnia loved him.</p><p class="paywall">Solomun was driven, wh his mother and s, to the Mistry of Fance. Drsed a black T-shirt wh an image of the “Mona Lisa” on the back, he stepped onto the balny. Noisy good will poured toward him. He raised his arms acknowledgment and began manng his ntrols. It was jt possible to see the back of the crowd on To Street. People waed to dance their apartments, near open wdows. Halfway up the street, where pestrians were prsed tight, the traffic lights changed, potlsly.</p><p class="paywall">As Solomun stood at his cks, seemed sudnly obv how to beg: “Swg.” Soon afterward, he played the remix of “Drone Me Up, Flashy” that had beguiled him at DC10. It was as if Solomun were curatg a mil experience entirely to light me. Perhaps I had spent so much time his pany that my preferenc had nverged wh his. And maybe this was a skill of good d.j.s—to wrtle your taste toward theirs.</p><p class="paywall">Some tun have recurred almost every Solomun set this summer—tun that he n’t get out of his head. Beg Solomun’s head is a valuable place to be. One track that he played Sarajevo was “Como,” a dark banger that has not yet been released. It was produced by Diseq—two Irish brothers, Joe and Cahir Kelly, who make unual, acid-tged techno g analog synthizers, and who work out of a stud above a chip shop their home town of Moville, County Donegal. This summer, Joe went to Pacha on a Sunday. He was d.j.’g at Amnia the followg night, but he wanted to wns Solomun+1—and, maybe, hear one of his own tracks. He stood near the ont of the crowd and ed Snapchat to display a msage to Solomun, text large enough that the d.j. uld read : “Hi Mlan, ’s Diseq :)” Solomun saw the note, and had Bor brg Kelly to the booth. An hour later, Solomun played “Como.” He danced next to Kelly as the track <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">shook the club</a>. “One of the bt nights of my life,” Kelly told me. “The hairs on the back of my neck were standg up.”</p><p class="paywall">In Sarajevo, the tensy of the mic creased as the hours dissolved. I joed the crowd. At the ont, near metal barris, young men and women were stompg the pavement. Solomun was due to fish playg at 2:30 <em class="small">a.m</em>. At about two, when there seemed no prospect of his wdg down, he asked Bor to requt an extra hour om the cy thori, which they granted. Light ra began fallg and a cheer went up. A nopy was erected over the cks. One man, a third of the way back the crowd, l a red flare. Sudnly, the gig had the tensy of a prott march.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-9 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Solomun pound his fist the air. He fished his set wh the ed of “Yumi” he’d done on the plane. As played, he realized that the extend openg was not as movg as the origal versn. “When you double , the moment is <em>gone</em>,” he clared. At 4 <em class="small">a.m.,</em> sharg burgers and i wh his mother and s the Printial sue of a Sarajevo hotel, Solomun said that he would remember the night of the red flare for the rt of his life.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Several hours later, Solomun flew to Istanbul and was driven straight to the venue for his show, on the Black Sea. He changed a trailer. Startg at sunset, he played a four-and-a-half hour set for seven thoand ravers; at 1 <em class="small">a.m.</em>, he began a five-hour after-party for six hundred people. The after-party room was so hot that dancers wng sweat out of their shirts. Solomun ntued playg until the crowd had dwdled to a hard-re ntgent of fewer than a hundred people. Eventually, even he was forced to nce that the night was over. When he turned off the mic, dozens of alyt surround him, some to prs on him a USB stick ntag a mo. Fally, at around 6:30 <em class="small">a.m</em>., he left wh a woman he knew om a prev vis to Istanbul. Their time together would necsarily be brief. The r to the airport arrived ten hours.</p><p class="paywall">Flyg back to Ibiza, Solomun said that his md was blank. The two nsecutive parti had draed him of ias and energy, yet he still had to play at Pacha a few hours. High summer was always like this, he said. On New Year’s Day, 2020, a film-director iend had asked him about his wish for the year ahead. Solomun replied, “A one-year break would be fantastic.” Two months later, the first <em class="small">COVID</em> lockdowns arrived. He regnized that other people were sufferg, but he was quietly grateful for the peace. He spent two summers Ibiza, where he attend Mass the thedral on Sundays, and worked on his tennis game wh a lol ach. Unlike other d.j.s, he wasn’t streamg sets durg lockdowns. He unrstood that d.j.s wanted to play such shows to support the dance muny, or to nnect wh fans, but Solomun’s view d.j. work was eher live or meangls. Last fall, as some clubs and ftivals reopened, he cid to qu d.j.’g altogether, then rensired.</p><p class="paywall">“I n always close the door,” Solomun said. “I get joy om other stuff.” Fancially, he was set. He wanted to wre film sr, and had ias for movie and televisn scripts. His role as a rerd-label boss was nsumg. He had also vted heavily two startup bs, cludg a health app. Some days, he thought that might be time for other d.j.s to have their turn the limelight. But he had been exced by the hunger of dienc after the panmic. “People party much harr—’s much more tense, ’s crazy,” Solomun said. “The power of mic, the happs of the mic. Sometim what I get back is very hard to handle, but . . . ’s worth somethg.”</p><p class="paywall">On the flight, Solomun closed his ey for two hours, bundled up blankets and chns. When he awoke, the sky was darkeng and the plane was scendg. Solomun said that, whatever the excs of the days and nights before, the feelg of gettg closer to home always lifted his spirs. He was exced about his +1 for the eveng, a relatively obscure d.j. om Northern Ireland lled Cromby. Out the pilot’s wdow, ad ahead, I spotted Ibiza. In the dyg light, glowed amber and pk, like the last ember a fire.</p><p class="paywall">“Oh,” I said. “It’s the island!”</p><p class="paywall">“<em>My</em> island,” Solomun
