And rather than jt sgg his raw feelgs—airg out romantic tratns wh l like, “What’s gonna take for you to listen?!”—on both the vios and the album, Dijon sists he’s tryg to embody a character that he scrib as “the worst person the world.”</p><p>Even that self-imposed ncept flattens the plexy on display, though. <em>Absolutely</em> is far om an arch exercise boorish satire. It ooz empathy. On “<a href=">The Drs</a>,” a twklg lament spired by Bonnie Rat, Dijon looks back on a cmbled relatnship while claimg his fair share of the blame. “Roo Clown” has him wailg, wh palpable anguish, om the viewpot of a woman who’s been stood up and let down by a thoughtls man.</p><p>“It’s a reactn to how so much toxicy and swagger is baked to a lot of sh,” he explas as Led Zeppel’s “Heartbreaker” charg out of the pizza spot’s speakers. “I n’t preach—I’m not better than anybody. At this pot, “Sk” has more than 62 ln plays on Spotify.</p><p>Although he assum playlists were volved, Dijon still don’t know exactly why the song took off. “I obvly want to say my management was really novative, but I asked them and they didn’t know eher.” He giv thanks to the “ridiculo streamg landspe,” but the experience gave him a classic se of imposter syndrome. He grew up listeng to album-centric visnari like OutKast and Joni Mchell—people who put the work. “There’s a part of me that always feels like I didn’t do my reps the same way.”</p><p>He started gettg v to rerdg ssns L.A., where artists and producers wanted to e him as a gut volist. But nothg stuck, and all felt so transactnal and unspirg to him. “It was the most flatg experience,” he says, thkg back to some of the silly, crooner-y l he was asked to sg. “Those ssns were so trmatizg that I jt ntue to block them out.”</p><p>Then me a strg of live shows 2019 that ma him feel even more unfortable wh his newfound notoriety. There he was, relivg the sadns of certa songs ont of strangers, and he felt like there was a disnnect. “I was way olr than everybody the dience and—this isn’t to sound ungrateful—but people were like, ‘Oh, your songs got me a vibe.’” That engagement gap, upled wh his naggg imposter syndrome, twisted to a kd of bterns toward the fans who would e up to him after his set, as if they were iends. “The are the sweett people the world, but I would be thkg, <em>You don’t know me, and you have no ia how trated I am wh my mic, or how proud I am. Dijon requted a p stop at a McDonald’s, and when they arrived, he and his iend tried to jt walk away. But when they reached a nearby unrpass, the driver rolled up and drew a gun. “They were like, ‘Stick ’em up!’” Dijon rells, shakg his head at the memory. He and his iend were robbed, but no one was hurt. “It’s not lost on me that I got out pretty clean.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>That close ll, along wh a uple other subsequent blackouts, ma clear that his relatnship wh alhol had gotten out of ntrol. He nonchalantly reels off some of the plac he lived throughout his youth as if he’s nng through a grocery list: Germany, Kentucky, Iowa, Hawaii, Maryland, California.</p><p>Along wh the nstant movement, he sometim felt like an outsir even among those clost to him. Knowg he was such a big Kanye fan, his step-mom took him out of school when he was 13 to buy <a href="><em>Late Registratn</em></a> at Target the day me out.</p><p>At first, he thought he might try to be a rapper. But that aspiratn was squashed, part, by an unlikely adversary: future Amy Award nomee Lakeh Stanfield. While attendg junr high Victorville, California, Dijon found himself face-to-face a lunchtime rap battle wh the guy who is now bt known for playg Dari on <em>Atlanta</em>. It didn’t go well. “He ed me,” Dijon says wh a lgh. “He put the h on my dream.” In high school, Dijon started makg beats on a cracked versn of FL Stud and then, armed wh a four-track rerr and a guar, experimentg wh lo-fi songcraft the ve of Grouper. He studied lerature at the Universy of Maryland, where he and his iends would miserate by pickg apart any album they uld fd. “We would talk so much sh on mic, all the time,” Dijon says wh a se. At a certa pot, he figured wasn’t right for him to be so cril whout tryg to put his own songs to the world.</p><p>Throughout his life, as he’s jumped om genre to genre as a listener and mician, there was a nstant: He loved to sg. As a toddler he sang gospel the bathtub. As a teenager he sang John Legend songs, loudly, suburban parkg lots. Casual crosstalk, giggle fs, and llective backup vols are strewn across the songs, imperfectns that only add character and solidary to the rerd as a whole. For all s vulnerabily, <em>Absolutely</em> never wallows, bee Dijon never sounds tly alone.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>One more ntradictory ia: The rerd may be nceptual and character-driven, but ’s also a genue reflectn of Dijon as an artist and a person. Every le isn’t directly transposed om his actual life, and yet ’s not pure fictn eher. Much of the album als wh the plitns of a roilg relatnship, and he tells me that, while makg the rerd, he and his girliend Joanie spl for a time. It’s not hard to notice that he directly referenc her by name on a uple of songs. “I might drop to my kne, Joanna please,” he pleads on opener “Big Mike’s.” “Will you take me?” In November, jt a few weeks after <em>Absolutely</em>’s release, Dijon ma good on that le and proposed. She said y.</p><p>Lookg ahead to his upg tour, he’s feelg more prepared. Self-prervatn is paramount. Instead of g his voice every night onstage, he started workg wh a vol ach to help make performg more staable. He’s packg nng sho his suse and bookg hotels wh gyms this time. He’s lookg to reta the vil-may-re excement he harnsed while makg the album and the performance vios. “Even if ’s a ms, feels a b better,” he says. “There’s a basic level of pure enjoyment now bee the mic is not jt me anymore. Not everythg is personal experience. It’s fictn—even my performance is fictn. I was very spired by ODB, and he was very much the part. I’m not an actor and I uld never do that, but I’ve been wonrg for a while: Can I method as a mician? When I listened back to that vol take, I was like, “This rawns is real, but nstcted.”</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">It sounds like you’re cryg toward the end of the song. How real is that?</div><p>Oh was real, bee I was really exhsted. It was 7 the morng. I was actually dnk. I was actually punishg myself, rerdg one take over and over and over so many tim that some of the imag the song were beg so te. I jt got so sad, thkg, <em>What if I were that person?</em> That was also a reka moment on the rerd: This is how I do . If ’s not about me, even my own limed unrstandg of the world, try to go there as eply as you n, through whatever means—though I learned that I need to fd more healthy means to do . But I was tryg to be as empathetic and passnate as I uld a narrative that isn’t necsarily about me. I feel so fortable performg that song so thentilly, and has nothg to do wh anythg specific my life outsi of a spirual nnectn to .</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">As far as how people have reacted to your mic the past, do you ever get tired of the fetishizatn of thenticy?</div><p>It’s gratg after a while. Wh somethg like “Roo Clown,” the reactn is, “Oh, he’s so thentic,” or, “I’m so my feels,” when the real reactn should probably be, “Hey, maybe this person is not dog well.”</p><div role="headg" aria-level="4" class="headg-h4">It n feel like listeners are programmed to want to hear someone themselv a song.</div><p>That’s the big qutn: Why do people like songs like “Roo Clown”? I mean, <em>I</em> like sh like that. There’s a moment on <em>Only Built 4 Cuban Lx</em> where Ghostface and he’s so dnk and slurrg and fucked up—and I love .
