And that remaed te — doctors, even those on the ont l riskg their liv to save those wh COVID-19, uld have lost their jobs based on whom they loved — until this past week's <a href=">landmark Supreme Court lg</a>.</p><p class="">Although doctors enjoy a privileged posn our society, we have never been immune to anti-LGBTQ discrimatn. Ten years ago, I gave a speech at Boston Children’s Hospal tled “On Beg Gay Medice.” I talked about how, growg up, I never imaged I would say that I was gay out loud to anyone — much ls ont of a large dience at the stutn where I worked.</p><p class="">I reunted some of the more disturbg stori om my trag at Harvard Medil School. The nrosurgeon who wouldn’t operate on a patient bee he prumed she was a lbian. The pulmonologist who avoid gog to the room of his patient wh HIV. The neonatal nurse who ma no effort to nta her disgt and disapproval of a serly ill fant’s two mothers.</p><p class="">And then there was the doctor who had supervised my pediatrics rotatn. Havg taken upon himself to be my mentor, he was full of advice about which clil urs I should take to prepare for my future pediatrics, and told me that his letter of remendatn would be sure to get me to my first-choice rincy. But after I told him I was gay, he whdrew his offer to wre me a remendatn. I had reason to fear that his abpt about-face would end my reer. However, there were no grievance boards — no procs place — to protect stunts like me.</p><p class="">Our untry has progrsed a lot sce then — and the medil profsn has, too. I was fortunate to fd other mentors pediatrics who not only wrote letters on my behalf but who were kd and supportive role mols.</p><p class="">But we still have a long way to go to achieve full equaly for LGBTQ Amerins, cludg those the medil field, even after the Supreme Court’s lg.</p><p class="">A uple of years after I gave that speech, was re-published here, and I immediately began receivg rpons om all around the world. Medil stunts asked if they uld e out whout endangerg their chanc at gettg to rincy. Unrgraduat asked whether they should disclose their LGBTQ stat on their medil school applitns. Some people I had known school even wrote apologi, assumg that they had ma homophobic ments my prence.</p><p class="">But other msag I received ma clear that circumstanc were not improvg for LGBTQ doctors and medil stunts everywhere.</p><p class="">One medil stunt wrote that 2011 New York, an attendg physician had lectured him that a patient’s “primary illns” was that he was homosexual. The stunt, who is gay himself, remd the attendg that homosexualy hadn’t been nsired an “illns” of any kd by the medil profsn s. The attendg shgged off, sayg, “Not my opn. There is somethg wrong wh those people.”</p><p class="">Another doctor, who sat on the board of the Gay and Lbian Medil Associatn, wrote that he still, 2012, received equent reports of medil stunts beg barred om anizg LGBTQ groups at their schools and receivg bigoted ments om faculty and fellow stunts.</p><p class="">The statistics rerce the anecdot.</p><p class="">• A <a href=">study</a> of heterosexual medil stunts found that nearly half exprsed some explic bias agast LGBTQ people, and a staggerg 82% exprsed at least some implic bias. That’s bad for LGBTQ medil stunts and doctors, of urse, but ’s also dangero for LGBTQ patients.</p><p class="">• More than half of LGB patients and 70% of transgenr patients one study <a href=">reported</a> havg experienced discrimatn at the hands of a medil profsnal. Worse still, the Tmp Admistratn <a href=">recently falized</a> a regulatn allowg medil practners to vlate their oath to “first, do no harm” by nyg re to LGBTQ patients if providg vlat their personal beliefs.</p><p class="">• In 2018, three 10 non-LGBTQ Amerins <a href=">reported</a> that they would feel “very” or “somewhat” unfortable if they found out their doctor was LGBTQ. Another <a href=">study</a> showed that many patients would swch provirs or practic if they learned their doctor was gay or lbian.</p><p class="">It n be easy to thk that bee the fights for marriage and work equaly have been won, all is well for the queer muny Ameri. However, hate crim agast LGBTQ people have been on the rise. And the majory of LGBTQ Amerins have been on the receivg end of slurs or other abe about their sexual orientatn or genr inty.</p><p class="">After my speech was published, the emails kept g for years. Bee I had put my own experience out there, the wrers seemed to feel safe tellg me their ept, most all-nsumg secrets. They were burstg to share their own stori wh someone who uld unrstand.</p><blockquote class="article-pullquote breakout"><p class="article-pullquote-text">I enurage my fellow LGBTQ medil profsnals who have not yet done so to crack open the closet door.</p></blockquote><p class="">The msag are ls equent than they ed to be, but the fear many doctors and medil stunts face hasn’t gone anywhere. More and more, their msag foc on beg out while also beg a member of another margalized group — askg, for stance, “Can I be open when I’m a lbian and Mlim? What will that mean for me as a medil stunt and later, as a physician?"</p><p class="">It is up to each of who are LGBTQ to ci whether to e out, and when, and to whom. But as we all procs the long-overdue secury afford by the Supreme Court’s cisn on employment discrimatn, I enurage my fellow LGBTQ medil profsnals who have not yet done so to crack open the closet door.</p><p class="">Inclu referenc to your same-sex spoe on your onle bgraphi if your lleagu mentn their oppose-sex spoe their bgraphi. Speak up if you hear a lleague makg a rogatory ment about LGBTQ people. Enurage your employers, or your schools, to make anti-bias trag a regular—and mandatory—event.</p><p class="">Ined, our schools should make sure that prospective stunts feel fortable beg out their applitns—and they should help their stunts learn how bias and discrimatn n take a ser toll on people’s health, through the damage they flict on self-nfince and self-teem, the strs they duce and the vlence they enurage.</p><p class="">As doctors, we learn to heal through diagnostics and prcriptns. But for LGBTQ doctors, we n also heal by tellg our stori and beg open about who we are.
