Gay Asians of Toronto was an anizatn enuragg polil advocy and social support for gay Asian dividuals livg Toronto. Formed 1980, the anizatn strived to provi a nurturg environment where gay Asians uld fd support through shared personal experienc and exchange of rmatn. The group had s genis after artist Richard Fung attend the 1979 Natnal March on Washgton for Lbian and Gay Rights, spirg him to lnch an anizatn that would create a sense of clivy and belongg for the Asian Canadians Toronto.
When Fung got back om the nference, he ntacted Gerald Chan, an activist who had published “Out of the Shadows”, an article on beg gay and Che, the Toronto-based magaze Asianadian. As an anizatn, GAT aimed to promote uny and mutual support among gay Asians by anizg social, cultural and tnal activi for their members. GAT’s ma polil goal was to create a llective gay Asian muny as a source of empowerment.

In 1982, Gay Asians of Toronto were chosen to lead Toronto’s Pri para.
As gays, we have to fight for our rights the straight society, but Asian gays, like black gays, Jewish gays, sexual mori, and the handipped among and every other mory wh the mory have other battl to face as well. ” In 1983, Gay Asians of Toronto lnched the quarterly magaze Celebrasian. The magaze ually nsisted of lol and ternatnal muny news, personal stori, poems, terviews of Asian-Canadians and ads seekg for 1985, Gay Asians of Toronto hosted the Seventh Internatnal Gay Associatn Conference, wh the theme of “Smashg Borrs and Openg Spac: General Opprsn of Gay and Lbian People”.
Most of the discsn revolved around polil anizatn, and nontg cultural inty and the racial polics of the gay muny. In 1986, Fung produced the vio Orientatns, a documentary film which 14 gay and lbian Asians tellg their personal stori about g out and fdg their place the muny.
