However, Gay, 66, said his foc began to shift more toward urban street photography the late 1990s wh a foc on people when he found downtown Birmgham filled wh people. “When I was dog archecture, there weren’t too many people the street at the time, and later, on when people start g back to town…people have jt always tertg to me, so I jt started photographg people, ” Gay said.

That people-foced approach has even led to Gay shoot his own versn of selfi somethg he don’t normally like to do. While Gay me to photography before the populary of digal meras and cell phone photography, he now shoots entirely digal.

I try not to jt fire away, unls ’s jt a fleetg moment at the time…, but I still like to jt view the image mera and jt shoot like I did, ” Gay said. Gay said one of his favore meras today is the Canon EOS-1D X; ’s a ltle heavy for rryg around on the street so he n often be found shootg wh eher his Sony a6500 or his Fujifilm X10.

While smartphon are nvenient, Gay said he never fds a reason to shoot stills g a phone, sce he’s always got a better mera on him. Sometim, though, Gay said he will shoot short vio clips on his smartphone an upload them to Facebook and Instagram. Dpe digal photography’s ease and st efficiency, though, Gay said he would like to shoot film aga and remembers fondly the qualy of lor a film like Kodak’s Kodachrome.
