Like lns of Amerins at the time, Gay chose to sign up for the g war, leavg Texas A&M Universy. Gay pleted flight trag and was missned as an Ensign Sept 1941. Durg the Battle of Midway Gay was the first of his squadron to take off om Hor on June 4, 1942.
Gay's un found the Japane rrier fleet and lnched an attack whout any fighter plane support. Although he was wound and his radman/gunner was dyg, Gay pleted his torpedo attack on the Japane aircraft rrier Kaga, but the Kaga evad his torpedo.
Rather than bankg away om the ship and prentg a larger target to s anti-aircraft gunners, Gay ntued toward the rrier at low altu. Gay[2]. After dark, Gay felt was safe to flate his life raft.
