The gay pay gap: men earn ls, but women earn moreWe’re sorry, this feature is currently unavailable. 01amA new dimensn of workplace discrimatn has been exposed: the gay pay gap.
Atralia's first study of how sexual orientatn affects wag has revealed gay men get paid up to 18 per cent ls than their straight paper's thor, Universy of Melbourne enomist Andrea La Nze, says the only apparent explanatn for the "substantial wage penalty" suffered by gay men is prejudice.
"The ma take-home msage om the paper is that Atralian workers dog the same job seem to be paid differently bee of their sexual preference, " she fdgs are nsistent wh studi Europe and the US which have also intified a "robt and persistent" wage penalty for gay men. "There are grounds for ncern that workers Atralia, particularly gay men, are discrimated agast bee of their sexual orientatn, " Ms La Nze's paper wage dispary between gay and straight men intified by Ms La Nze's mollg is strikgly siar to the genr wage gap – the long standg gulf between average full-time earngs of men and women. However, Ms La Nze found the negative pay gap experienced by gay men relative to heterosexual men do not apply to gay women.

Instead gay women enjoy a wage premium of up to 13 per cent pared wh heterosexual women. Ms La Nze says one possible explanatn is that gay women are reward bee their employers have a perceptn that they are ls likely to leave the workforce to have children than heterosexual women. Overseas studi other have also intified a most wage premium for gay La Nze ed data om the Hoehold Ine and Labour Dynamics Atralia (HILDA) survey to pare the wag of heterosexual and gay workers between 2001 and 2010, takg to acunt factors like occupatn and levels of tn.
"I hope that the next paper I see on the issue fds that gay men do not face a wage penalty. Lbians earn more than heterosexual women while gay men lag wag. Gay men earn around 20 per cent ls than their heterosexual unterparts, while lbians out-earn heterosexual women by at least 33 per cent, are the fdgs of a new report by Profsor Mark Woon at the Universy of Melbourne and Associate Profsor Joseph Sabia om San Diego State Universy.

“Employer discrimatn is likely a major part of the explanatn for the wage gaps, pecially the se of gay men. Of those surveyed, 53 per cent of lbians have partners and 47 per cent of gay men. “We found that the wag of gay men are growg at a much slower rate than the wag of heterosexual mal, ” Prof Woon said. “Gay mal who are most likely to be observably gay by employers—those who live wh a same-sex partner—face larger earngs penalti than those who are discreet about their sexualy.
The report also found that gay men are 16% ls likely to be employed and are substantially more likely to have several perds of joblsns than heterosexual men.
