On April 8, 1897, when a fire began near and then raced up the elevator shaft of Hotel Knox Gay Street's 400 block. "Huge balls of fire fell like snowflak" wrote one newspaper as flam spread to buildgs north and south on Gay Street's east si. It was nearly eight hours before the fire burned out, leavg most of Gay Street north of Unn smolrg s.
Wh mut they heard a crack om the rear of the three-story woon buildg at 402-408 Gay St. Davis spotted a fire between the hotel office and the first-floor McNulty Grocery that shared the hotel's 402 Gay St. Dgstore at Gay and Unn.
Only two buildgs on the east si of Gay's 300 and 400 blocks remaed. Only a vant buildg at 316 Gay stood. At 412-414 Gay, Sterchi Brothers' four story bs and $30, 000 of furnure, rpets and home goods were stroyed.
