KOZ GAY FIRE ISLAND
“And Fire Island is a fantastic place to brg fay and iends, gay or straight. Fire Island P—one of a number of small, beachy hamlets reached by ferry off the south shore of Long Island—has long been a summer getaway for the gay muny.
” The prt is by Koz, a known photographer on the island and thor of Gay Fire Island.
Currently nng as an exhib at the Universy of Southern California, "Fire Island: Out In The Sun, " on view om April 24 - 28, is a look at morn day life the beloved gay Huffgton Post chatted wh Koz about his work and what he is tryg to acplish wh "Fire Island: Out In The Sun. When I started photographg gay Fire Island, my ia was not to document an amic sense. It was a strange world, even for me as a gay man.
"GAY FIRE ISLAND"
I wanted to pture the moments for people -– gay or not -- who, like me, had never seen anythg like them off, pturg gay life a normal light is very important to me. Myself, I have very personal and long-standg relatnships wh both gay muni on Fire Island -- Cherry Grove and the P -- and I have, of urse, wnsed many chang each place throughout the years. No, I am not meang this any “heterophobic” sense at all -- for one thg, is amazg and gratifyg how well gays and open-md straights exist the Grove and the P today -- but even then is hard not to remember that heterosexuals have the rt of the world available to them and seems only fair that we gay people should have a ltle b of space -- both physil and psychologil -- for ourselv.
In addn, I love teractg wh olr people and I actually get along extremely well wh them, men and women, gay and, believe or not, the past few years, I’ve even found that the guys the P, famoly more snobbish, have bee more “approachable. I have been preparg a book of photos of gay Fire Island for awhile now and I believe that my photos add a new and signifintly different perspective on the perceptn of gay people today.
