The template for Gay's The Word was the Osr Wil Memorial Bookshop Manhattan, found two years before Stonewall. Uli says Gay's The Word has been “absolutely crazy by” sce they have been able to re-open.

Gay's The Word was a lifele for the queer muny throughout the 70s and 80s, when mastream bookshops were reluctant to stock what society had wily nmned to be 'perverse' lerature.
" Uli says over time faiar fac the store have bee iends, creatg "a kd of gay fay atmosphere, a queer fay atmosphere, " which he says is very unique and special. “You’ve got to remember the late 1970s there was no place for the lbian, gay and queer muny to accs lerature, " says Uli. “We thk of Stonewall as beg the moment when gay liberatn started but the Osr Wil memorial bookshop was existence two years before that, " says Uli.
Gay's The Word founr Ernt Hole (the "perfect name" for a gay male bookshop owner, lghs Uli) had gone out to New York to fd out how Rodwell's shop was operatg, and happened to arrive the day after Stonewall began. “Inially - om the nversatns I’ve had wh Ernt - there was some antipathy, there was some divisn, there was some homophobic graffi that went up, " he says, addg, "I thk at that pot we had to have shutters on the door…” “It’s difficult to time travel your md to the social and cultural temperature of the late 1970s this untry, " says Uli. Gay's The Word's Uli Levart remends the bt-sellg queer books for 2021.
