has-dropp__lead-standard-headg">The spair and disgt I felt after seeg the director Sam Gold’s rendn of Tennsee Williams’s 1944 play, “The Glass Menagerie” (at the Belas), was so bilatg that I uldn’t tell if my nfed, hurt fury was ed by the pretent and llo stagg I had jt wnsed or if my anger was a rult of feelg robbed of the bety of Williams’s script.</p><p class="paywall">Tennsee Williams was thirty-four years old when his exquise four-character study about fay, memory, and love-as-chance premièred on Broadway. He rved the mancript out of his own bon. Like the pre-succs Williams, the play’s narrator, Tom Wgfield (Joe Mantello), is a wrer who earns a margal livg a shoe factory. Time: the Great Deprsn. Place: St. Louis, Missouri. Williams based Tom’s mother, the redoubtable Southern-born Amanda Wgfield (Sally Field), on his own mother, who was also ntrollg, realy-challenged, and needy—a formerly vivac belle now livg a world that is circumscribed by the poverty of realy and by children she nnot unrstand.</p><p class="paywall">Together, Amanda and Tom look after Tom’s sister, Lra (Madison Ferris), a pafully shy young woman whose bout of plrisy as a teen-ager has left her wh a limp. Lra don’t like the world bee she don’t feel n accept her difference. What she lik to do most is stay home and play old rerds on the Victrola that her father, a worker wh the telephone pany, left behd when he “fell love wh long distance” and spl. In the fay’s small, dark stg room, Lra spends hours polishg her llectn of lite figur, which Amanda lls her “glass menagerie.” To create the handipped, self-nsc Lra, Williams drew on his love for and unrstandg of his mentally unstable olr sister, Rose. You n hear his wistfulns the openg monologue, when Tom tells that what we are about to see is a “memory,” and therefore “not realistic.” Williams turned his back on the realism of the tim—the war was still gog and nventnal attus were nng high, both on and off the stage—to craft a nearly plastic art out of a moribund form. (He lled a “memory play.”) “The Glass Menagerie” don’t move wh the logic of a dream; tells a lear story, clearly and effectively. But ptur the eye and the md like one of Lra’s glass figur—somethg you turn this way and that orr to tch the light of your own memori of fay and heartache and all the chang that led up to that moment which you had to leave, the better to bee yourself.</p><p class="paywall">The first problem a productn rife wh problems is that Gold mak clear his sire to leave his mark on the play—at all sts, cludg the play self. Gold first staged this versn of “Menagerie” at Toneelgroep Amsterdam, where Ivo van Hove is the artistic director, and he seems to have absorbed the style that has ma van Hove so popular: a “radil” approach to text and performance that promot the director as the te star of a productn, over the script and the actors. Gold’s stripped-down stage as no surprise. Van Hove’s partner and set signer, Jan Versweyveld, has created siarly “nceptual” sets for van Hove productns, cludg his stagg of Williams’s “A Streetr Named Dire,” which Blanche was a bathtub for most of the actn. (Andrew Lieberman is Gold’s signer, but looks as though Versweyveld had lled his stctns over the phone.) We watch as Field, ty and domable—like Mantello, she wears ntemporary cloth—helps Ferris out of her chair. Ferris reli on her voice to build character, but Gold don’t seem to have worked wh her on how to modulate to Williams’s natural and poetic language. Y, y—we get that, by stg an olr actor the part of Tom, Gold means to make the character’s failure to pe his rponsibili at home, his failure as a wrer, even more poignant, but jt lands wrong: Mantello’s Tom has flop sweat all over him, and the age difference between him and Lra mak no sense, unls Amanda had Lra when she was a much olr woman. Is that supposed to expla Lra’s dimished state?</p><p class="paywall">Tom has worked hard to keep Lra at home, so his rentment mt be thick, but Field’s Amanda don’t really get to rpond to his emotn. Rather, she is howlg the wd of that big stage, wag to fd a character that she uld have found the script, if the script were what terted Gold. Field is an appealg performer many ways, but her Amanda is brtle and flat (her voice is th, like Ferris’s), an amic exercise a hip productn that Field seems to have taken on orr to rema, as the agents say, “relevant.” But talent is always relevant, and is always soulful. Gold’s distant view of the world that Williams wrought dismays and breaks the heart for all the wrong reasons. You get the sense that what terts him most is the ia of beg “ser” a European way. But her voice is her voice, not somethg that her protégés n replite. Gold’s shift away om LeCompte’s geni to van Hove’s form of ld abstractn is a lculated one. Gold’s recent stagg of “Othello” was tertg to watch bee the fired-up actors—particularly Daniel Craig, as Iago; David Oyelowo, as Othello; and Marsha Stephanie Blake, as Eia, Iago’s wife—crashed through his directorial dryns by lovg the language and makg the Bard physil.
