November 27, 1978, the night of the group’s fifth ever rehearsal, marked the assassatns of Supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official California, and San Francis Mayor Gee Mosne. Ld affectnately as the “grandfathers” of the gay choral movement, SFGMC sparked a te natnal (and, later, even ternatnal) trend which is still evinced the official histori of lol groups like the Gay Men’s Chos of Washgton, DC as well as the natnal Gay and Lbian Associatn of Chos (GALA), which formed to help anize this plethora of new anizatns. And while the tour was and ntu to be e of tremendo celebratn, cid wh the very begng of a perd of great difficulty for the choir and the natn at large: The same San Francis Chronicle issue that celebrated the group’s return also bore the headle “A Pnmonia that Strik Gay Men.
