I wanted to love this one, I really did, pecially sce Gay's novel An Untamed State is one of my all-time favor. And no, not jt bee is important and is heartbreakg - which is both - but bee Gay is one of the bt wrers I've ever known.

This is Gay's memoir om the time she was gang raped at twelve-years-old, to her later need to e food to build a fortrs around herself, to her more recent life as a woman tegorized as the horrendo phrase "super morbidly obe". Gay's self-awarens is paful to read as she talks about experienc narrow seatg on airl, movie theatr or rtrants, or at events. Gay is not happy wh her body, but also angry at the world for beg a place that mak her unhappy wh her body.

Gay’s narratn perfectly nveys every emotn, perfectly nveys jt how horrifyg and hard to talk about her experienc are whout melodrama or tears.

I’m a ltle horrified by several reviews seemg to imply - or outright state - that Roxane Gay is makg her problems worse by wallowg or by “refg” to open herself to others - or even worse, that she is “choosg” not to heal.

Instead of okie-cutter niceti, Gay offers a harrowg and hont acunt of her sufferg, as well as the paful, slow, and necsary steps she has taken to heal.

Appet, Gay blends the personal and the polil wh great skill, showg how food tersects wh femism which tersects wh sexism which tersects wh trma and so much more. In large part bee of her distct voice, Gay somehow manag to make this memoir sightful, heartbreakg, unfortable, thentic, and sometim even humoro all at once.
