A Brief History of Gay Pri.
In June of 1969, a group of LGBTQ+ people New York Cy rted followg a police raid of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar loted on Christopher Street Greenwich Village. This seri of events was a turng pot for the LGBTQ+ muny and marks one of the most signifint events leadg to the morn gay rights movement.
As the years went on, addnal ci North Ameri and Europe began to hold their own public monstratns or pri day, eventually leadg to what we know today as a gay pri para, march, celebratn or ftival. Most gay pri paras and events also occur durg a peak season of the year when the weather most ial, yet another reason to book your trip durg the event. Lbian and Māori rights activist Ngahuia Te Awekotu talysed gay liberatn Aotearoa. In March 1972 she was nomated to study abroad the Uned Stat, planng to rearch Amerin gay liberatn and Red Power. Infuriated, she gave a rog speech to stunts at the Universy of Auckland, challengg them to be open about their homosexualy: “who out there is crazy enough to jo me – and let’s start gay liberatn!
At a meetg Te Awekotu’s flat shortly afterward, Aotearoa’s first gay liberatn group was found.
Te Awekotu’s msage reverberated throughout the untry; her subsequent viss to Wellgton and Christchurch rultg gay liberatn groups immediately beg tablished by the universi both ci. ‘Gay Day’ was Aotearoa’s first pri, kickg the movement off wh a “public and provotive” start. [5] In 1993, he would go on to bee New Zealand’s first out gay member of Parliament.

By the mid-1970s several gay liberatnist groups had formed. Unlike earlier gay anisatns, liberatnists did not foc specifilly on law reform, stead seekg to “liberate their own kd every way possible”. Dpe such differenc between groups wh the broar movement, by 1977 the Natnal Gay Rights Coaln (NGRC) had formed, wh an alliance of 35 member groups and an affiliated membership of over 70, 000 dividuals.

Gay anisatns were however dogged by sexism, racism, transphobia, and classism var ways, and this has meant that many groups were margalised om the mastream movement.
