The Center hosted meetgs by femist social service groups, women’s polil mte, and lbian activist anizatns, cludg the Lbian Femist Liberatn, which broke off om the Gay Activists Alliance 1972. A former school, the buildg is currently the home of the Lbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgenr Communy Center, which provis tn, programs, servic and advocy for LGBT rights.
Durg the 1980s, the buildg was the headquarters for the Coaln for Lbian and Gay Rights, which fought for the passage of the 1986 ban on discrimatn agast sexual orientatn. Known as New York Cy’s olst ntuoly operatg gay bar, Juli was opened 1840 and began attractg gay patrons the 1950s — although the management staff refed to acknowledge their prence. In fact, acrdg to the Natnal Park Service, the Kameny Hoe “served as a meetg place, archiv, rmal unselg center, headquarters of the Mattache Society, and a safe haven for visg gay and lbian activists.
