Tobac and alhol e and related morbidy and mortaly are cril public health problems. Rults of several, but not all, studi suggt that lbians and gay men are at elevated risk for smokg tobac and alhol mise. Data om random sample general health surveys of adult members of a large Northern California Health Plan nducted 1999 and 2002 were analyzed g genr-based multivariate logistic regrsn mols to asss whether lbians (n = 210) and gay men (n = 331) aged 20–65 were more likely than siarly aged heterosexual women (n = 12,188) and men (n = 9342) to be smokers and heavy drkers. After adjtg for age, race/ethnicy, tn, and survey year, lbians were signifintly more likely than heterosexual women to be heavy drkers (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.08, 4.23) and current smokers (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.02, 2.51). Among men, gays were signifintly more likely than heterosexuals to be current smokers (OR 2.40, 95% CI 1.75, 3.30), wh borrle signifint creased risk for heavy drkg (OR 1.54, 95% CI 0.96, 2.45). Lbians and gay men may be at creased risk for morbidy and mortaly due to higher levels of cigarette and alhol e. More populatn-based rearch is need to unrstand the nature of substance e the muni so that appropriate terventns n be veloped.
