WALTER GAY (1856–1937)
Artist Walter Gay was born Hgham, Massachetts, on January 22, 1856. In 1889, Gay married Matilda E. Gay beme a member of a number of Amerin and European artist societi wh which he exhibed, cludg the Society of Amerin Artists (1880), the Société Natnale s Bex-Arts (1890), the Société Nouvelle (later the Société s Petr et s Sculptrs) (1897), the Society of Secsn (1897), and the Natnal Instute of Arts and Letters (1898).
Begng 1895, when the Gays rented a small summer hoe at Magnanville, he began patg his first "empty terrs, " pictns of unhabed, elegantly appoted rooms. In 1905, the Gays rented the Châte du Bré, near the village of Dammarie-l-Lys. Gay would pat the terrs of the Châte du Bré for the remar of his life.
