But one night last Febary, a crew of workmen shooed away the players so they uld erect a stage for a dance performance by a round-faced man a pk sari.</p><p class="paywall">Insi a makhift makp tent ma of flappg whe sheets and bamboo pol, the man, Anil Hankare, offered well-meang advice to his backup dancers, who were all women.</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">“One foot jail, one hand your wallet,” he utned a young woman who was tellg him about her boyiend. “Tea whout k!” he lled to another wh a dark plexn. “Apply more face powr.” As he spoke, Hankare was unrgog his own dramatic transformatn. Strippg down to his unrwear, he pned on a nse black wig, slipped to a red bra, then a pk sari, applied makp and pil of jewelry. When he was done, almost two hours later, he appraised the now voluptuo figure starg back at him the mirror and said, “Enough. Mtn’t make the girls jealo.”</p><p class="paywall">Hankare is a foundg member of Mumbai’s first all-male lavani dance troupe, which recently celebrated s tenth anniversary. Lavani is a folk dance, tradnally performed by women for men. The populary of B Baykancha Tamasha (or Performance Whout Women) and other female-impersonatn groups Mumbai suggts that the cy may slowly be gettg fortable wh flamboyant exprsns of male sexualy.</p><p class="paywall">Mumbai is relatively liberal pared to the rt of India. Last month, Queer Azaadi Mumbai, an L.G.B.T llective, succsfully held s fifth-annual gay-pri para. The cy hosts an annual queer ftival, and clubs host vatn-only gay nights. Still, until 2009, when the Delhi High Court stck down a law crimalizg homosexualy, the Mumbai police famoly hunted down gay men public parks and threatened to arrt them for breakg the law if they didn’t subm to their mands for money and sometim sex.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">The cy’s gay culture is domated by young, English-speakg men, many of who work ll centers and fd partners onle. Fancial pennce mak easier for them to live separately om their parents—still a cultural anomaly India—and to exprs their sexualy more openly. In ntrast, Mumbai’s workg-class gay men live <em>chawls</em> (or tenements), sgle rooms that they share wh as many as a dozen fay members. They start work while still high school, and marry wh a few years of graduatg. Fay prsure to have children is fierce. Fearful of beg ostracized, they keep their sexual inty secret. Most of the men don’t have the money or nfince to vis gay clubs, and they fd partners public parks and have sex public toilets.</p><p class="paywall">The men speak the lol language, <em>Marathi</em>, and reject the term “gay.” Instead, they prefer the ncepts of <em>kothi</em> and <em>panthi</em>, pendg on whether they see themselv as feme or mascule, rpectively. “<em>Kothis</em>,” said Vikram Doctor, a journalist and anizer of the pri para, “are queens—flamboyant, bchy, and out to shock people.” The <em>panthis</em> are their nsorts. It is the <em>kothis</em>, effemate men, who are drawn to lavani as performers, while <em>panthis</em> form a re part of their dience.</p><p class="paywall">Although lavani (which means bety) dat back to the seventeenth century, is disdaed even now by the urban middle class for s sensual movements and suggtive lyrics. It’s an energetic dance, performed to the beat of a <em>dholki</em> (hand dm). The dancer lip-syncs songs of sire that often cross the le om the romantic to the erotic. In one popular lavani song, the dancer likens herself to a mango, “cheap and juicy”; another she begs, “take slow, take slow, my body is already wet wh sweat.” Bhhan Kaonkar, who -directed “Behd the Adorned Veil,” a documentary om 2008 on the dance, says that <em>lavani</em>’<em>s</em> primary dience is workg-class men, both sgle and married. They keep obssive track of performance dat, and share rmatn via group msag on their mobile phon. And they always attend performanc packs. “They’re rpectful of the dancers,” said Kaonkar, “but they’re fely attracted to them.”</p><p class="paywall">Women are a small, but signifint part of B Baykancha Tamasha’s fan base. In fact, Hankare’s iend Anil Vasuvan, who nceived of the troupe, scrib their performanc as “fay iendly.” “We are novative,” said Vasuvan, om his apartment Mumbai. “But what we do is art. This exaggerated femy would be a challenge for most men to succsfully imate whout appearg like drag queens, but Vasuvan and his troupe pull off. “To pass for a woman you have to look like a woman,” Vasuvan said. “So I chose men willg to grow their hair, wax their arms, and shape their eyebrows. He is of middle age and most height, and has a high, gentle voice and a ponytail.</p><p class="paywall">“I should keep a stick handy,” he said, only half jokg. “The men get very exced.”</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Although members of B Baykancha Tamasha have e out as <em>kothi</em> to iends and pursue sexual relatnships wh other men, they are not willg to publicly associate wh L.G.B.T . Vasuvan refers to himself as a “bachelor”, and speaks admirgly about Bal Gandharva, a prumably heterosexual neteen-hundreds theatre star who impersonated women so well that his image was ed to sell women’s fashns and smetics. Bal Gandharva was married, as are four of the eight full-time members of B Baykancha Tamasha.</p><p class="paywall">Arranged marriage is the norm for <em>kothis</em>, acrdg to Naz Foundatn Internatnal, an advocy group on male sexualy. Even <em>kothis</em> who were aware of their attractn to men sce they were very young marry to avoid social stigma, and to fulfill their obligatn to produce heirs. It isn’t clear whether their wiv know of their hbands’ sexualy when they get married. For those who fd out later, divorce is still enomilly and socially damagg enough that ’s not really an optn. As One unmarried member of B Baykancha Tamasha said, “Before I marry I want to meet my wife to be at least once, and talk privately wh her. She has to unrstand that I have facials and wear my hair long and sometim drs like a woman. Only if she accepts this, will I marry her.”</p><p class="paywall">Abheena Aher, a transgenr activist, has her own dance troupe—the more recently formed Dancg Queens. She has performed wh members of B Baykancha Tamasha, and wish they would embrace L.G.B.T , jt as Dancg Queens has done. But the members of Dancg Queens are a younger than the members of B Baykancha Tamasha, and their experienc have been different. They speak English and e the Inter. Aher is aware of this. She is also aware that Mumbai’s seemg tolerance extends only so far. <em>Kothis</em> are thrashed by the police for havg sex public plac; they are blackmailed by lol goons, and they live fear that their fay will bee tranged om them, perhaps even ny them a share of the property. “Life is easier for those who rema silent,” said Aher. “The private disfort may be more, but the public harassment is far ls.”</p><p class="paywall">Gay-rights activists see the succs of B Baykancha Tamasha as a validatn of workg-class gay culture. But attentn on the troupe has revealed many of the challeng that <em>kothis</em> still face, even parison to privileged gay men. In fact, acrdg to a member of the troupe, there is only one place that the liv of Mumbai’s two sets of gays even tersect: on the b that transports executiv to and om the ll centr. “Some nights a performance will end so late we miss the last tra home,” he said. “So we wa for a ll-centre b. When there are seats available, the driver stops for , even though he isn’t supposed to. He’s for the sh, but for ten or twenty pe we get to go home luxury.”</p><p class="paywall">One afternoon I vised Hankare at his hoe a low-e rintial area the Mumbai suburb of Andheri. The door was open, and the room, which Hankare was reclg on a bed readg a film magaze, was a burst of lor—pk ceilg, flower-patterned floor til, pictur of celebri torn out om newspapers on the walls. When he’s not at work, Hankare drs like a man, jeans and T-shirts, but he wears his nails long and pated purple. Hankare put asi the magaze, and lled for his wife to make tea. “I didn’t ve my wife for our first few shows,” he said. “Then she me along, and soon afterwards brought her parents. They were shocked. But they unrstand me, and admire my skill.”</p><p class="paywall">It’s been a year of huge succs for Hankare. He appeared on a realy show and had small parts a Hdi film and a TV advertisement. After ten years wh B Baykancha Tamasha, he n fally support his wife and their two teen-age children through dance. In ntrast, before he joed the troupe, he spent his days drearily, managg a telephone booth. When I mentned the word <em>kothi</em>, Hankare looked around quickly to make sure that we weren’t beg overheard. Lowerg his voice he said, “that word mak people unfortable. Some <em>kothis</em> flirt openly wh men, handg around their phone number like they’re handg out sweets. Their behavr embarrass women.
