Groundbreakg queer polil actns have been an active part of morn history, wh almost 50 years’ worth before that fateful day 1969. Today, advance of this month’s Gay Pri celebratns, we’ll take a look at some of the more obscure polil actns that have also changed the urse of queer history.</p><p> </p><p><strong>1920s: The Society for Human Rights</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>When U.S. Army soldier Henry Gerber was statned Germany om 1920 to 1923, he saw the rise of homophile anizatns, as gay rights groups were once lled. Gerber was spired by the work of Dr. Magn Hirschfeld, founr of the Scientific-Humanarian Commtee, an anizatn dited to overturng Germany’s anti-homosexual lgs. Gerber believed there should be an anizatn like this Ameri, too, and upon returng to Chigo 1924, he dited himself to velopg one. The group me together December 1924 as the Society for Human Rights, the first gay rights anizatn Ameri. The anizatn would go on to clare that homosexuals were an opprsed mory, that velopg a muny was sential to overg opprsn, and that anti-gay legislatn the U.S. need to be overturned. However, 1953, the group’s radil ials were trad for more acodatnist on, which stated that homosexuals should adapt to, not bat, heterosexual liftyl orr to obta equaly. Historians today argue about the anizatn’s effectivens after this, cg that eher flourished and helped make chang to legislatn, or that membership cled leadg to efficiency. The Mattach dissolved at the end of the 1960s, when gay rights activism beme more aggrsive.</p><p> </p><p><strong>1950s: The Dghters of Bilis</strong></p><p>The Dghters of Bilis was formed 1955 San Francis by Phyllis Lyon and Del Mart. It was named after poet Pierre Louÿs’s <em>The Songs of Bilis,</em> which Bilis was said to be a female lover of Greek poet Sappho. The Dghters of Bilis was one of the first lbian anizatns ever tablished the U.S. Chapters spread across the untry and even Atralia as the 50s went on. The group eventually evolved to promotg lbian rights and lbian femist polics. A policeman grabbed a drag queen an attempt to arrt her and she threw a cup of ffee his face. A rt began almost immediately, wh glass wdows smashed by thrown sugar shakers, tabl flipped and cutlery thrown. The particular Compton’s ctomers had had enough. It was by no means unprovoked, eher: ps had been arrtg drag queens, gay htlers, and transgenr women at the 24-hour eatery regularly for cross-drsg, for obstctg the siwalk, for any reason they uld fd to throw them jail. It didn’t help that Compton’s owners preferred the queens, htlers, and trans women leave and would ll the ps to have them removed. After the cint, the der banned trans women and the Tenrlo’s largely queer muny rebelled, picketg the tablishment and breakg s new wdows. The Compton’s rt received no verage at all any of San Francis’s publitns, but today is regnized for s importance as one of the first queer uprisgs agast police btaly.</p></div></div></div><div Realizg their prence uld brg joy and iate social change, they formed an orr of queer nuns, The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.</p><p>Today, donng drag versns of nuns’ habs, they draw attentn to queer discrimatn and relig hypocrisy, promote safe sex and te agast the dangero effects of dg e, all the while raisg money for AIDS, LGBTQ+, and muny-related . Chapters have sce expand across the globe.</p><p> </p><p><strong>1970s: Street Transvte Actn Revolutnari (STAR)</strong></p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-3 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Street Transvte Actn Revolutnari, or STAR, was anized by queer historil ins and self-scribed drag queens Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Both had been prent at Stonewall and active the GLF, and cid to anize homels trans youth, drag queens, sex workers, immigrants, and low-e people New York. Rivera and Johnson were homels themselv, and saw STAR as a way to help and provi shelter for the people they knew as their children. They bought a buildg, fixed up, provid shelter and cloth for the people who me through. STAR grew om New York to Chigo, California, and even England and lasted for approximately three years before shut down.</p><p> </p><p><strong>While the rts at Stonewall are of urse important</strong>, their story starts s before and ntu today. Thanks to people like Henry Gerber, Phyllis Lyon, Sylvia Rivera, Larry Kramer, and untls others, queer activism still has a loud and forceful voice and out of the muny. We owe so much to their legacy.
