The film has s genis the largely tobgraphil 1939 novel Goodbye to Berl by Christopher Isherwood, who had travelled to the cy 1929 pursu of s vibrant gay scene. While sex between men was illegal there as was Bra, Berl beme a mag for sex tourism and hundreds of gay bars appeared throughout the cy. Anti-Semism was on the rise, Nazi ralli doubled, trebled and quadpled size and the bohemians – gay people, munists – all livg like every year was their last, were soon to be purged and imprisoned ncentratn mps alongsi the Jews (Sam Mens' 1993 theatril adaptatn of the mil end on this very grim note).
Masteroff reterpreted Isherwood's words to an iastic celebratn of everythg mp and bched, heighteng s homoeroticism and dimmg the btaly of fascism to the background. Probably the film's biggt divergence om both the book and the stage mil is that the Sally of the movie is a talented sger and enchantg performer whereas she was prevly picted as amb but largely talentls, her medcry keepg her trapped the Mnelli starred as hedonist baret star Sally Bowl – her breakout role (Cred: Getty Imag)Due to s subject matter, Cabaret was never gog to be a film that turned s gaze away om the taboos of gay sexualy and creepg fascism, but nor uld , wh the ntext of the US moral nservatism of the time, embrace the explicns of Isherwood’s wrg.
While a 21st-Century dience is more acctomed to seeg same-sex relatnships on screen, Cabaret's matter-of-fact but largely implic pictn of queerns was ground-breakg for s time, as Dr Emmie McFadn, a film studi lecturer at Sheffield Hallam Universy, tells BBC Culture: "This film was released only three years after the Stonewall Rts, which was the sgle most important event that the led to the gay liberatn movement the US. The first Pri para happened one year after Stonewall, and was the two events that ma posive portrayals of homosexualy on screen possible. "Homosexualy was one of the last taboo subjects Hollywood and so few films alt wh explic terms – Stephen TropianoMichael York, who the film played Brian Roberts, the stuffy and slightly shocked observer of chaos and Isherwood’s alter ego, also nfirms to BBC Culture that there were never any discsns about makg his character's sexualy more explic: "We thought was so strong to keep everythg implied, sometim that n be a better way of dog thgs.
