(Courty The History Project)</figptn></figure><p class="">Two Boston artists, Daniel Thaxton and Bernie Toale, reimaged the rho for a public ad mpaign helmed by Gay Media Actn-Advertisg. Toale, who was also a -founr of Gay Media Actn, explaed that the rho was chosen bee “ is a much maligned and misunrstood animal” and that the lor me om the mixture of pk and blue, a symbolic merger of the mascule and feme. The ads were meant to enurage the visibily of the LGBTQ muny Boston.</p><p class="">By March of 1974, Gay Media Actn sent prs packets tailg the ad mpaign to media outlets Boston. The hope was to dm up enough public support to n the ads on the MBTA time for Boston's Pri march that June. The MBTA and Metro Trans Advertisg, the MBTA's New York Cy based advertisg agent, approved the signs for the ads.</p><p class="">In May of 1974, Metro Trans Advertisg announced that s lawyers were "unable to terme eligibily of the public service rate" for the Lavenr Rho ads.<strong> </strong>This cisn raised the $2 per r-rd rate for public service projects to a $7 per r-rd rate, triplg the st of the mpaign. Gay Media Actn didn't have the funds to ver the crease st and the Lavenr Rho ads were put on hold.</p><p class="">Gay Media Actn ma the cisn to challenge the MBTA and MTA's cisn to raise the price of the ads through public prott and legal means. In rponse, the Lavenr Rho buted at Boston's Pri march as people wore t-shirts, ps and signs featurg . Eventually, the anizatn raised enough money to beg the circulatn of the ads. The number of panels was rced to 100 and were rtricted to the Green Le, strategilly chosen for s placement and route through the cy and beyond.</p><p class="">By Dec. 3, 1974, the first cycle of ads were nng on the MBTA's Green Le. They would n until Febary of 1975. The Lavenr Rho lived on as a symbol of the LGBTQ muny, makg a send appearance at Boston Pri 1976.
