In realy, back 1966 Bulgaria was amongst the first untri to crimalise homosexualy – not jt the Eastern Bloc, but Europe as a whole. In Stal’s Soviet Unn such people were acced of belongg to the bourgeoisie, and homosexual relatns between men, particular, were punished wh up to five years of prison and hard labour.
The 1963 march led to a group trial year later of 26 men for practicg homosexualy, many of whom were high profile dividuals, cludg actor Gei Partsalev, pop sger E Dimrov and his moured partner, songwrer Vasil Andreev, poet and translator Borislav Geiev, and other actors, film directors, and dancers – all of whom were the public eye. The plete failure of the experiment eventually led to sexologist Todor Bostandzhiev clarg homosexualy an “curable mental illns” and for this reason, he argued, should not be punished as harshly as was then outled the law.
