On the first anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rts, a march set out om Greenwich Village toward Central Park, culmatg a “gay-” at Sheep Meadow. Organizers were surprised to see thoands of people turn out to prott anti-gay sentiment and promote gay pri durg what was then lled the Christopher Street Liberatn Day March. It was the first time that gay and lbian people had taken to the streets for a public display of solidary, muny, and support.
Then about 20 years ago, a new route emerged wh the march ncludg the historilly gay Greenwich Village neighborhood. Wslow and Bce Kelly—also happened to be gay. Central Park isn’t technilly a gay bar, or even a gay tablishment, but on the send Sunday of every month the summer, might as well be.

Gee Chncey, intifyg the park as a major LGBT social center and cisg ground his book Gay New York, found that at the turn of the 20th century men met next to Belvere Castle, by the 1910s bench near Columb Circle had bee a proment pickup se, and the 1920s the lawn at the north end of the Ramble was so popular that was nicknamed “the Fed Pla.
” In the 1920s and ’30s, heavily trafficked by gay men were the areas south of 72nd Street, near Columb Circle, Bethda Founta, and the walkway om the southeastern rner of the park to the Mall, known as “Vasele Alley” or “Bch’ Walk. ” Chncey also noted that, as early as 1921, police were sent to the park to entrap and to arrt gay men, cludg mass sweeps.
