The publitns started wh the movement to ga equal rights for homosexual Amerins, and th this civil rights movement is documented by the very people who were active the effort. They started durg the worst of tim, the McCarthy era when homosexuals and Communists were nsired to be alli and were labeled as threats to the natn’s secury.
The first publicly available publitn (1953), ONE, suffered om the same problems all early on did: ltle e, people aaid to have their nam as subscribers to a homosexual publitn, bs aaid to place ads, and few thors or journalists of note willg to let their nam appear the publitn. There was also a problem few other had: there were homosexual people hidg who tried to keep their sexualy om beg qutned or disvered by loudly prottg the existence of a publitn discsg homosexualy. Many such people later were arrted for homosexual acts and still refed to support the effort to te the public and change laws.
