A iend recently asked me how I would translate the English Term LGBTQI (Lbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgenr, Queer, Intersex) to Arabic as he read somethg on Twter. The ميم is no cince bee مِثْليّ (gay, lbian) and مُزْدَوِج (bisexual) and مُتَحَوِّل (trans) and مُتَحَيِّر (queer) all start wh the letter م.
LGBT is still a popular term ed to discs genr and sexual mori, but all GSRM are wele beyond lbian, gay, bisexual, and transgenr people who nsent to participate a safe space. In addn to the specific terms, there are general slang exprsns that n be employed when referrg to someone who intifi as LGBTQ+ (lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr/transsexual). Due to cultural taboos around homosexualy and genr nonnformy wh most Arab societi, n be difficult for dividuals who intify wh the labels to fd acceptance and unrstandg om those around them.
The Arabic subtl for the film The Bt Exotic Marigold Hotel translate the word gay to the Arabic equivalent of pervert, acrdg to an article by Steve Clemons the Atlantic. In Michel Fouult’s 1976 book The History of Sexualy, the French philosopher claimed that although homosexual acts are prehistoric, Europeans and Amerins didn’t regnize homosexualy as a tra until the 19th century. Several lguists backed Fouult’s claim, argug that many Wtern languag had words for homosexual acts, but not for homosexualy, until very recently.

Luti is ually translated as sodome and is wily nsired rogatory, but some gay Arabic wrers have recently -opted the term the way gay anglophon reclaimed the word queer the 1980s. (Like the translators of The Bt Exotic Marigold Hotel, Google ed an accintal stir 2006 when a er noticed that s software translated gay to luti. The eighth- and nth-century wrers Abu Nuwas and Al-Jahiz ed the word latah for homosexuals, and the latter wrer even referred to ghulat al-latah, or ultra-homosexuals.
Turks, for example, refer to gay people as csel, — means same, and csel refers to genr—or sometim borrow the English word self, referrg to gay people as homoseksuel. (I am the Arab world a lot however and learng more each trip) Perhaps after the a iend, Foued Mokrani, speaks Arabic jt fe -- and reported on his Facebook page the followg after watchg a film durg a flight to Paris:I watched the movie The Bt Exotic Marigold Hotel and noticed they translate the word ''gay" to ''pervert" the Arabic subtl!!
They should sue the exchange trigued me -- and obvly raised the qutn of what the right word Arabic might be for "gay" and my own experience wh the language whether there was such a word at all. Started recently g a word for but still very unfaiar I wrote to Mokrani about this, trigued that a language as distguished, betiful and storied as Arabic would not have been mornized to clu "homosexual" s basic vobulary, he wrote this to me:In Arabic, there is no exact word to say "homosexual.

" Recently, a few people started g the word "mhli" modifyg the word for "sex" -- meang "same as me" they ed the movie is "pervert" to translate the word gay -- or "cheth" same word was ed by my Imam when I met him as a young guy and told him I like trigued, I lled Ghah al-Omari, executive director of the Amerin Task Force on Palte, to see whether what I was hearg was right or not -- and ask how he would say the word "gay.
" Al-Omari jt happened to be walkg to a lecture he was givg to a bunch of foreign service stunts on the topic of Arabic language, so the timg was texted me after his lecture:I have on good thory that the word is "mhli al-js" (which is a leral translatn of "homosexual"), sometime shortened to "mhli" which is the leral translatn of "homo.
"There are lots of stggl si Arab terra today -- about human rights, about the role of women, about gays, relign, tn, about morny general -- but clive language that buttrs society's evolutn and advancement seems important. To that end, translators of Amerin movi -- like the terrific and heartwarmg The Bt Exotic Marigold Hotel -- really ought to preference words like "homosexual" or even "homo" their Arabic form over "pervert" or "viant.

I thk I didn't see "gay" equivalent Arabic, but there's one for "homosexual" "شاذ" or "مثلي الجنس", but "gay" I thk 's a word which is born wtern Christian culture, I never see somethg like Arabic, but to be more accurate we need one knows Lebane to tell the so accurate word that dialect.
I don't know my iend but I don't believe that "gay" = "homosexual" 100%, I thk there's a ference, maybe we n ask English fom, maybe one of 'em is jt a dialect and the other is of standard English, also there's "gay" as an adjective and as a noun, maybe there's a relatn, I feel that there's a ference. I don't want to make a lguistic risk and say that "gay" is like an exprsn the Arabic lerature "الجواري الغلاميّة أو الغلاميّات", for that I felt that there's a ference between "gay" and "homosexual", acrdg to that Arabic exprsn you n ll a woman as "gay" but if you said that the woman is a homosexual, means a ferent meang, means lbianism, but "gay woman" acrdg to the Arabic exprsn is another meang. شاذ, on the other hand (and as Elroy poted out) is more like perverse, perverted, viant, abnormal is an unsirable way, and so on, and I've never heard people e to refer to themselv (they jt ed the English "gay").
ARABIC WORDS FOR 'GAY' NEED TO BE BETTER THAN 'PERVERT' OR 'DEVIANT'
This meang is que evint om the fact that شاذ is ed not only for homosexualy but also other rejected sexual clatns (for example, the Arabic Wikipedia page for paraphilias is tled شذوذ جنسي).
That said, 's hard to ppot jt how rogatory the term شاذ is bee 's hard to separate s meang om the near universal rejectn of homosexualy wound to the fabric of society. I've heard people e the term otherwise tellectual nversatns and didn't get the imprsn that they were tendg as a slur or an ditn of their own view on homosexualy - they were jt g the word they'd heard thoands of tim before, the accepted label for this particular group.
I was makg a mentn that maybe there's a ference acrdg to an Arabic exprsn the Arabic lerature but there's no proof that the Arabic exprsn is really the equivalent for "gay" and if there's a proof we'll see that "gay" n be for male or female wh a ferent meang than "homosexual". To a gay person, شاذ may be as offensive as "fag" (or even more so, given the notative meang), but most other people don't see as profany at all.
LEBANE ARABIC: GAY/HOMOSEXUAL
It's jt that unrstandg the nuanc of this term is necsary for unrstandg why, for example, was possible for Ma to propose as an equivalent of "gay" whout even mentng that uld be offensive even though a term's offensivens is evintly pretty important when to suggtg translatns to foreigner.
While شاذ is, or has tradnally been, ed as a "flt" term of sorts to mean "gay" or "homosexual, " I don't thk we n good nscience ll ntral any ntext, even when ed by people who are not beg patently offensive.
