Followg the llapse of the Berkeley GLF early 1971, the origal Gay Sunshe llective was dissolved and the paper spend. Among the books fund part by the grants were the Allen Gsberg/Peter Orlovsky llectn of love poems and letters Straight Hearts' Delight (1980), Jean Ge's Collected Poems (1981), the Brazilian gay novel Bom Crulo, and the anthology of gay poetry Orgasms of Light (1978). Among the volum of Lat Amerin gay lerature, Leyland's favore was My Deep Dark Pa Is Love (1983), which clud fictn (and some non-fictn) by twenty-four wrers om five untri: Brazil, Mexi, Chile, Argenta, and Cuba. What is need is a newspaper that will reprent those who unrstand themselv as opprsed— polilly opprsed by an opprsor that not only is down on homosexualy, but equally down on all thgs that are not whe, straight, middle class, pro-tablishment… It should harken to a greater e— the e of human liberatn, of which homosexual liberatn is jt one aspect—and on that level ma s stand. WINSTON LEYLAND may not be a hoehold name but he is one of the most important figur post-Stonewall gay liberatn.

Wston Leyland's associatn wh the Berkeley gay lib tabloid, Gay Sunshe, led to one of the most succsful stori gay publishg. By 1971 Leyland (who had immigrated to the Uned Stat om England as a boy) was the publisher and edor of Gay Sunshe Journal, which had moved to San Francis.

Gay Sunshe's twelve year history of tellectual digny on the cuttg edge of the gay experience remas unmatched by any gay publitn sce. In the mid 1970s, Leyland cid he wanted to publish material a more permanent book format so he found Gay Sunshe Prs as a non-prof rporatn which he served as edor--chief.
