Aqunah is the center of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aqunah. The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head Aqunah beme a ferally acknowledged tribe on April 10, 1987 through the Bure of Indian Affairs.
The town was lled Gay Head until 1997 when the Tribe won the right to change the name of the town back to the origal Wampanoag name. Atop the cliffs is the Gay Head Light.
