Those tak are totally valid, and ’s not that I didn’t engage wh them, but would be possible to bee too immersed that world. I thk of that as a really stctive example: hedonism and exprsn have been policized. It’s not news to people wh Fire Island that qutns of diversy and cln have long been a problem, and seems that those are beg addrsed now. There were moments where I wished that the evince would play ball, like, “Damm, where’s Patricia Highsmh’s novel set on Fire Island?” There are the phantom imaged works that we don’t have bee they don’t exist. To wonr why is to speculate, but I felt myself bshg agast those gaps sometim.</p><p data-no-id="27" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>ESQ: You mentned the panmic as another nstrag factor. I found myself this bizarre posn 2020, ready to wre and then sudnly lockdown. The week before, I’d booked flights thkg was okay to spend more time on Fire Island and do a lot of the wrg there. I do wonr how that would have changed the book.</p><p data-no-id="29" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">I cid the end that the nstrat to image and live virly was a part of this story. So many people know what Fire Island is but may never go. It remas a kd of horizon for loads of queer people. There’s a different versn of the book, which is a disembodied lerary history that says, “Here is what’s been wrten, and here’s what we n learn about ,” but I felt as soon as I arrived on Fire Island that there was no way I uld wre that wasn’t lored by my own experience. Perhaps many ways, I had felt ambivalent about muny and what that means and what that looks like, so there was somethg personal at stake wh this book.
