I wish that I had given my muny more, bee I did a lot of rejectg my teens and early twenti. I was the Elora. I did all the schemg, and I got out. But I do feel like I missed some years there of beg home and beg wh the people. I didn’t give them the chance to love me. I took that out of the equatn too early. And now that I’m g back and I’m rennectg wh people, ’s been such a blsg. Tradnally, my tribe was very open and acceptg of transgenr dividuals. But then on the other hand, for me growg up, you would ll people <em>nádleeh</em>, which sentially was ed as “f****t.”.</p><p>I had to leave the rervatn bee I uldn’t transn there. I moved to San Francis wh $45 my pocket and I transned; was a much safer environment. I would do the group therapy ssns, and after one, this woman and I were talkg on the siwalk. She found out I was Native and said, “Oh wow, you’re Native. It mt be a paradise for trans folks bee ’s so open and acceptg.” And I was like, <em>What are you talkg about? No, ’s not.</em> But that nversatn actually led me to go back home and start talkg to relativ, askg more about my own culture that I had grown up .</p><p>I me to learn that <em>nádleeh</em> actually means “the changg one,” some of the first people that our creator ma. They were ma before men and women, and they’re actually held very high teem our society. It was only when I was to adulthood that I realized my queerns. Growg up on my Rez, I was the oppose of Elora. I never wanted to leave. Also, where I’m om is dissiar to a lot of different rervatns the sense that ’s so close to a major cy that has three ln people. [The Mohawks of Kahnawà:ke] have a lot of enomic prospery, yet I still grew up on the ad end of a dirt road the middle of the bh. I had the bt of both worlds and I was fortunate enough to grow up a muny that is so full of pri for beg Mohawk. My <em>tóta</em>, my grandmother, was the prcipal of the Mohawk [language] immersn school. I was very privileged on that ont.</p><p>When I did realize I was queer, forced me to look at my relatnship wh my muny differently bee I thought that beg Mohawk and beg queer were mutually exclive. I thk one of the big reasons for that is bee the Kahnawà:ke rervatn where I’m om was origally formed as a rervatn for Catholic Mohawks. That’s where Sat Kateri, the first Native Amerin Sat, is om.</p><p>So, I’m not even sure, tradnally, how Kahnawà:ke viewed queer folks and trans folks. I know Two-Spir is a term that is ed a lot of muni, but as far as I know, Mohawk people didn’t. That’s been my rervatn g that term, spe me feelg that ’s betiful and one that I uld, if I were om another natn, potentially nnect wh. It’s been a lot of learng and undog the lonizatn that my muny faced and ntu to rry wh them to rencile the parts of myself, to actually be whole my queerns and beg Mohawk.</p><p><strong>TP:</strong> I also don’t feel fortable g the term Two-Spir for myself. When I was llege, I rearched my tribe bee, of urse, all that rmatn was lost my grandmother’s generatn as she went to the [Indian] boardg schools. She didn’t really pass on the language down to my father, so he didn’t pass down to me. I didn’t really get any of the tradns. But when I read about and found out that there were extragenred and different sexual rol Kumeyaay muni, I was like, <em>I wish I uld have heard this om my grandmother and not om this anthropologil textbook.</em> She uldn’t tell me. And the divi was so close — I’m not talkg about hundreds of years ago.
